Summer clear out

I’d then want to spend big on an 21-25 yo keeper who has a world class ceiling. (like the Sistine Chapel)

We all want Max Aarons. And another RB like Atal if I sold Aurier.

1-2 Fast, central defenders. One left footed if possible.

Another exciting attacking left back, in the mould of Rose when he was good.

Have to find the new Wanyama. Or 2 if Ndombele is brick after all.

Not signing Ziyech and Bruno Fernandes has given Dele a stay of execution. But I want to see GLC as the #10 replacing Eriksen’s old work rate and output. And he will, with bells in. He’s class.

1 more winger, for squad depth. 2 if we can upgrade Lucas, who I only want to keep as an understudy anyway as we’ve what happened when he starts.

Right, come at me you bastards!!!

I wouldnt be too far off that. However Moura is a perfectly fine squad player, and Davies isn't high enough priority to be updated in my mind. To me a pair of CBs, another CF and a RB are more urgent and probably a back-up for Lloris too. I dont see us doing more business than that in 1 summer...and even if you manage to get the back-up CF and keeper on the cheap, 2 CBs and a RB are at least £100m. Maybe we could get that Man U keeper on a free and then sign a CF for £20m so its £120m all in...its still more than I would expect us to spend in 1 summer.

Whatever order its done in though, we need to have a higher success rate than recent years
Yep don’t disagree. Lucas and Davies were in the B list and marginal in/out decisions. I moved Lucas back in as rotation on the edit.

But not Davies as I want a return to the attacking fullback days. Not this wonky stay at home brick.

When I compare our 2016/17 team to this team it makes me sad.

But I also think we need to look at how that 2016/17 team came about. I dont think we can buy ready made players for every position. It is worth remembering that both Walker and Rose had loans out to gain experience.

Nothing in life is a set formula but I really think we can get back there if we went down a similar path of targeting young hungry and talented players. We might have the wrong manager for that(a manager I back to be fair)

Loaning out Skipp and Parrott next year so they can become part of the great 2021-2022 season is important. Would like to see us only go for player around the 22 year old age, players like Sarr at Watford, players with talent and a high ceiling but with a point to prove.

Most importantly I would like to see us get some tough fcukers in midfield again, we have been lacking that for a couple of years now.

Foyth is the one I would most get rid of, you could tell from the get go he was no good. When you have watched enough football you can just tell.

We have somewhat lost our soul and identity as a team. When we were at our zenith we had a great English core of young hungry players who bought into the Poch model of hard work:

Walker
Rose
Dier
Trippier
Dele
Kane

supplemented by some experienced strong, skilful foreign international players:

Lloris
Verts
Toby
Dembele
Eriksen

We should endeavour to recreate that original model. For too long now we have bought young foreign players who haven’t adapted to the EPL. Let’s get our identity back please .

Yep kind of what I was hinting at. Kalvin Phillips in midfield from Leeds, the two fullbacks from Norwich would be a good start.

Yeah all 3 would be great

I am also fond of the Bournemouth keeper Ramsdale if they go down.

would have had a look at Brooks but to be honest not sure where he would fit in our team.

Do you remember the rumour that we were looking at Brooks when he was at sheff utd to turn into a striker?

I remember us being linked but not as a striker
I remember doing some research and finding it odd that he chaos wales as his nationality

Just in terms of a clear out, before you even start to strengthen the side, I reckon I could rock up tomorrow and sell or release the following 9 players - with a 0-5% impact at most, in terms of being missed:-

Vorm
KWP
Rose
Foyth
Vertonghen
CCV
Wanyama
Clarke
Lamela (= the 5%)

That’s a hell of a lot of absolute dead wood.

thats fair, although harsh on foyth, and completely misguided regarding Lamela obviously

also, Vorm was signed as 3rd choice to cover injury, he's done his job

this is where Poch went wrong, he tried to take shortcuts, Levy was wrong in letting him, and giving him so much power on the transfer the committee, the sooner we get a DoF in place and get back to long term thinking with transfers the better imo, players are supposed to get better on the training pitch, buy athleticism, coach technicals

for all of the talk about Jose's MO (Mou Mou's Mo?) his signings so far have been in this direction

Goalkeepers; Lloris, Gazzaniga, Vorm

Vorm will leave, and I think personally we need a reliable keeper, wouldn't be surprised if a team came in for Gazza either, would love us to get Ben Foster, solid reliable vocal keeper.

Fullbacks; Aurier, Davies, Walker-Peters, Rose

KWP & Rose will go, Davies is solid enough as a backup and Aurier attacking wise is good, but if we get a good offer I'd bite anyone's hands off. Would love us to get Dumfries, PSV captain, 6 foot 2 right back, fast, strong, great tackler and played with Bergwijn.
Aaron's too interests me but reports say he will cost 45 mil.

Centrebacks; Toby, Jan, Foyth, Sanchez, Tanganga

Think the only certainties are Toby & Tanganga, Toby is our only organiser, I think we will keep Sanchez but he won't get much playing time, when dominating a game he just isn't good enough, unfortunately Jan & Foyth will be gone. Milenkovic would be great, fantastic in the air but I'm sure Mourinho wants someone abit more experienced.

Midfield; Winks, Lo Celso, Dier, Sissoko, Wanyama, Ndombele

Really have no clue, Lo Celso and Winks we will keep, Wanyama is 100 gone, Maybe Jose thinks a pre season after being in and out of injury Dier could get back to his best, I could see him keeping Sissoko to shut games out & Ndombele is talented but I really don't know. People have mentioned Sangare who I haven't seen.

Forwards; Kane, Alli, Son, Lucas, Bergwijn, Lamela

We won't get rid of Dele, think he done alright up front today, he needs a rest. Mourinho loves Lucas he's a work horse. Lamela he seems to love too, but we clearly need a striker, and Mourinho would love a big fat lump. Would love Deeney, but supposedly he is done according to Watford fans, we have been linked to Muriqi who is in Turkey who's a lump.

My rationale was Foyth has barely been used and has been here a few years now. if he had left in January or even July, it would have caused minimal, if any, disruption to what we’re putting out on the pitch.
Lamela is in a similar boat. He’s just never available to play a game. If he was a fit lamela, he’d be first name on the team sheet. He isn’t, and one doesn’t seem to exist. Therefore if he left, it would make hardly any impact on the first team. Is an odd cameo with keeping a player on decent wages, when we should instead buy someone who can contribute. We’re not a charity after all.
Vorm indeed was only here as cover. Will be released and it will have zero impact. Hence why I added him to the list.

I know it's going to look awfully patronising but I have to admit that this thread put a smile on my face last night. Not because of the views in it (although I hardly agree with anyone) but because it reminded me of days long gone, when we had Gooner George in charge and everyone periodically wanted the whole team out (usually after a defeat). Those were the days...

As for the rest, I don't know. Sacking Mourinho at this stage would be both unfair and unrealistic. First things first, few people wanted him out when it looked like he'd salvage our season and bring us back from 14th to 4th. The defence was just as poor back then but, somehow, we managed to win games, despite the absence of our only real striker. Up until the Villa game and Son's injury, we looked like we're on the right track.

It's not his fault we don't have any back-up for Kane. He likes to play with a focal point upfront which may be a good idea or not but that's his choice anyway. I read he's got no gameplan but he does have one. What he doesn't have is the players to implement his system. That's not the same thing. I read here and there that he could have altered his tactics to adapt to the current situation but that's a load of gonad*s. Come on, who does that and who does that successfully? The only guy I can think of who had to rethink his system is Joachim Löw but being a national team manager is a completely different story. Pretty much everyone else stick to what they know because football is all about drills and practised moves these days. It's not as easy as downloading a guardiola tactics on a football manager forum.

As for the players... I think the world 'loyalty' should be banned from football. Who wanted Moura sold after the return leg in Amsterdam? The guy didn't even got to start the most important game of the season, keeps working his socks off in every game for the team and all he gets for his reward is 'meh, should be sold'. That's cold. Also, we made it to the Champions League final with a fair bit of luck but also with Sanchez, for instance. So to say he's never going to be good enough might be a stretch.

Having said that, nobody can argue that our defence has been awful this term, with or without Mourinho. My take on it is that it's a combination of circumstances (Verthongen played a very important role for us but for some reason, his heart's not in it anymore) and a lack of protection from midfield. When we concede, it's usually because our defence, which is already unbalanced in the first place because of poor individual form, tiredness and a right back who plays as a right midfieder, is left exposed by our midfield. And that, in turns, happens because our midfielders aren't very defence-minded and have to commit forward to help with a misfiring front line.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't bet on a massive clear out. Dele was doing well when he played off Kane. A player of his caliber (when he's at his best) isn't easy to find and would probably be out of our price range. Plus, he's the kind of players Mourinho likes. We need a plan B but I wouldn't mind giving him a full season playing off a good striker to see if he can be coached back to his best. Moura is also a Mourinho player, definitely. Even Sanchez could surprise a few people, if we sign a commanding center back as his partner.

Oddly enough, bar for those who can't get a look in, Aurier is the one who intrigues me the most. I can't see him fitting in a Mourinho team but, at the same time, he's been one our best performers since he took over. In any case, the top priority is to sign a couple of good/decent defensive midfielders, a center half and *cough* some cover for Kane. I don't really see the need to offload 90% of the squad. Most of them are made to look poor because we're left with no-one to fill some positions and, at this level, you can't get away with that.

So what you're saying is....

We need to be brave :D and revitalise the squad?

What is this witchcraft?

with our top 4 players back - kane, son, loris, ndombele and sissoko our midfield and attack should be fixed.
sure we need a few adjustments here and there, but defence is calling for an overhaul, we need a backup striker.
levy sanctioned a magnificent seven before - i think he'd be happy to push the envelope with an exotic eight... especially as mourinho makes them come cheaper.
