The case for the defence

Also, the high attacking line does not suit Harry Kane’s game. Inevitably, our build up is too slow and predictable and then Kane is crowded by defenders.
Pochettino needs to start mixing up his tactics.

The high attacking line is there to stop an easy out ball so Kane and his attacking crew and press and win the ball high and go to work against an out of position and unprotected defence.

But we're not really doing that anymore are we? Can't recall the last game when we pressed successfully like we consistently did 2 years ago.

Not at all, yet we still setup for it.

It seems we dropped the press in attempt to manage fatigue across the whole season, the result has been fewer turnovers and we still look shagged by christmas.

Yay team!

If you watch the chance Lloris saved before the goal, Sanchez was at fault there as well. He followed the striker into no man's land and left 40 yards of space behind him.

Schoolboy stuff.

He follows his man around. Doesnt know how to position himself. He’s still young but he has a LOT of learning to do

A couple of seasons ago we had a combination of Dembele/Dier/Wanyama, all 3 in excellent form, protecting the defence, and our pressing up front was much better. The defence hardly ever had to actually defend.
That's the difference.

There’s more to it than that, he looked like the fastest and the strongest player in the PL his first year, now he looks slow and weak.

So when they actually need to defend they can't?

I don't think Toby is a vocal enough partner. We need a centre back who can command the defence like VVD does. He made Lovren look decent. At the moment Sanchez makes basic errors with his positioning when the ball is played over the backline and tbh he is not getting any assistance from his partner.

He looks better with Jan I agree, and yes he always seems to be the one covering.

Is part of it that Sanchez is happier on the right, I do wonder why he has to shift side rather than Toby who has far more experience?

Look at the goals we’ve conceded at home this season though, pub players scoring from long balls, it should be a piece of tinkle for our defenders to handle those.

We were better at defending as a team before. Too often, the defence is left on their own, which makes it more of a 50/50 in terms of winning a duel.
Attacks gone to brick too though so there is a much deeper problem. I still believe Poch is the man to sort it out but he isn't having the team firing on all cylinders at the moment.
