VAR: Sponsored by Chelsea

Poch:

I did have a plan. I prepared myself mentally: ‘What’s the best way to mark Ronaldo? If they pass to him and I give him space to run into, he’ll kill me. So, what should I do? Not give him space. If he turns, either I foul him or he’ll do me’. It makes me laugh the way they pinpoint how Alderwiereld is one of the best because he doesn’t commit fouls. A centre-back that doesn’t commit fouls! In my time, if you didn’t commit fouls, it was because you couldn’t play at centre-back. Twenty years ago if you didn’t go in hard and mark your territory, strikers would eat you alive. And when you got a yellow card, at least it was after giving someone a good kick.

Which has NOTHING to do with grabbing a player and throwing to them to the floor not being a penalty offence in your book!!!!!

Mitrovic in this match on now had two swiss defernders hanging out of him making sure he couldn't reach a cross. And they gave a free against him.

Yes, the arrogant ref did not give it, and did not review it. He should have used VAR.

Seems like you lazy buggers have been discussing VAR all day while I was working hard all day... so I am too late to intervene in Gutterboy's crazy ramblings, suffice to say that nearly every post of his recently is utter rubbish.

VAR has been brilliant so far... today Neymar conned the ref but he watched it back on video and realised it wasn't a penalty. Brilliant.

The number of times Spurs have been done over by 'bigger' teams, cheating us. I am loving VAR.

We just need the refs to actually review things, and not arrogantly refuse to review it (as must surely be the case with these 'wrestling' incidents).

I guess the ref was fed up of Mitrovic pushing, niggling, fouling, shoving, and thought "ah well, you deserved that you pimhole"

Who are you calling lazy?

On the plus side, we did get these gems from GB.

"It's the death of narrative football"

"And penalties aren't real goals. They are technical goals. Like penalty tries in rugby. I think they should only count as half a goal in scorelines."

Was a joke wasn’t it!

How does VAR work in those circumstances? They tell the ref to look again and he said “nah” or they looked at it and miraculously thought it wasn’t a pen? Same as the Kane pens.

Think VAR’s been extremely hit and miss this tournament so far.

ask mitrovic or kane about how brilliant it has been.

also neymar shouldve been awarded a pk. had that foul taken place in the middle of the park, it wouldve been a freekick and no one wouldve questioned it.

the foul on neymar shows why var just doesnt work on football though. football is one of the very few sports in which the rules (as they are written) are not actually applied. the game is actually officiated more via past precedence. all sports where video technology is used well are sports where rules are literally applied - this is simply not the case in football.

ultimately by reversing the decision on neymar today, the ref has indicated that a "little bit of pulling (dare i say cheating) is allowed". the rulebook is pretty black and white re shirt pulling - and shows the can of worms that var will open up.

what football needed wasnt var. it was just refs doing a better/more professional job. and it definitely wasnt too much to ask of them

should count as double imo. would encourage opposition teams to stop trying to cheat ;)

There's just as much cheating from defenders, especially using their arms on set pieces, and some of them have been caught this WC. Some of them are experts at making sure the ref doesn't see it.

youre wrong. theres way more cheating from defenders and its not even close. theres infinitely more instances of shirt pulling than diving every game. but because football is a working class game in england, the fans turn a blind eye to this type of cheating whilst turning their noses up at the type of cheating that the likes of neymar does. fans unfortunately do not seem to realise the hypocrisy of their views, and if you were to stretch the argument, you could even say that the english fans are displaying a level of cultural insensitivity/ethnocentrism towards players like neymar.

What?
Just because you do it week in, week out, they aren't pens? Rubbish! Both were pens and by the sounds of it you should be enjoying at the very least a penalty concession per match if not an early bath if that is how you go about your work.

The whole essence of football is pitching quick and skillful attackers against strong and cunning defenders. If defenders are prevented from using their strength and dark arts, games will end up 10-8, and football would basically become basketball.

No it isn’t and no it won’t.

Mitrovic was holding and pushing too. That's why it isn't an obvious mistake, and VAR does not come into play.

It always was going to be though, only those who believed it would stop all bad decisions and make the game fairer ( it won"t), it will create as much argument, discussion and as many wrong calls as there was before.

How is Arty McStrawman these days? He’s not posted for ages.

If it was some who posted did not have shares in VFR ( and we discused that the other day) i may have been hurt by that ( fudge not really). :p Just more rubbish from those who believe that VFR will help the game flow more.
