Yet another laptop thread

Been thinking about getting a new laptop as my mac mini G4 is starting to show its age. Found that Dell are doing some deals at the moment I can pick up a xps 15 for between Ôé¼699 and Ôé¼899 (?ú570-?ú740) depending on processors, i5 or i7, screen type, blueray etc. Whats the opinion on Dell laptops, is build quality etc any good?

been looking at the same ones myself , As my tosh laptop is finaly making death rattle noises. So would be interested to hear what comes about on this

dont get a fudgein mac

LOL!

Regards Dell, I won't touch them now as I bought an all singing, all dancing model back in 2004 that turned out to be a pig with known issues that Dell refused to support properly. The thing needed a major recall but never got it (it had major, major power and heat issues).

If you go Dell, then make sure you look at reviews first.

I've heard some horror stories (from people on this forum) about Dell laptops

Here's my experience:

- I work for companies that are 'hard core' users of laptops
- For example, our presales staff require complex Windows architectures, distilled down to virtual images running on Dell kit (Windows Server 2008, SharePoint, SQL Server, BizTalk, ERP)
- I have been at several companies over the last 10 years working with guys that absolutely hammer their laptops, 12 hours a day (we are not just talking internet browsing and word documents)
- I have never seen a single problem with a Dell laptop

They are workhorse machines in my opinion

For the last two and a half years I've been using a Latitude E6400. No problems

You would have to think that, since taking over Alienware, they have learnt a thing or two about putting together a gaming machine/desktop replacement. They certainly didn't have a fudging clue when they put my machine together.

Steer clear from Dell - absolute turd

If you want a supremacist Windows machine, I'd reccommend a mid to higher-end Vaio piece (F-series for example) or one of HP's mid-end Pavilions / desktop replacementes. Very solids machines overall.

Do you want power or battery life and mobility? Can't have both

Yesterday afternoon in the betting thread: "My laptop is fudged will post a screen shot later, had to use my mobile for in play bring, was so nervous!"

;)

Here we go again

I've just explained how my companies have been using HUNDREDS of them for 10 f*cking years

And the usual, kneejerk bull brick fills the thread

I give up

I'm out

Funny you should say that, I've gone from Dell over to Vaio and it's been a dream. Original Dell was an Inspiron 5150. This is what Wikipedia says about the piece of crap:

"The laptop was infamous for a huge number of design failures, overheating, battery failures, connector loosening, motherboard failures. The owners of Dell Inspiron 5150 initiated a class action lawsuit on Dell resulting in Lundell Settlement. On December 4, 2006 the United States District Court for the Northern District of California granted final approval to the settlement granting relief to the owners of Dell Inspiron 5150."... Sadly no such lawsuit or reimbursement happened in UK.

I've got an FZ11Z now and it's been the conkers by comparison. A couple minor niggles, but it's an old machine now and with a memory upgrade a couple months ago, it is soldiering on.

They are the Trabants of laptops, imv. mostly built from the cheapest of components in my personal experience

So what's a decent laptop for 600 quid or under? Good battery life (4 hours+) and decent power?

All depends on what you're using it for mate. If you're gaming, you'll never get good battery life. If you're just using it for browsing and the occasional video, then you might as well get a higher end netbook, or even tablet, instead of a lower end, bulkier machine.

Whenever I get a new machine now, I take a look to see if the processor is any good: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ do good comparison testing. You'll want to take a look at the graphics card as well if you're gaming, don't ever go for an intergrated processor/graphics chip if you're doing any proper gaming, you want a stand alone GPU.

Truth is though, if you don't ever really use any intensive programs like Adobe CS apps or use it for gaming, then just get yourself the machine that suits you best and looks good. Most amount of ports, bluray playback, feel of the keyboard, battery life etc. are all more important than the internal gubbins if you aren't going to put it through it's paces.

I'll mainly be watching it for email, work, watching stuff online and browsing mate but will occasionally want to whip out a total war game. I'm definitely going to get a tablet soon but I'd quite like to get a laptop too.

If there is a machine which looks good, does simple processes like word and browsing very well, has good battery life and is quiet, I would take that over a machine which runs out of battery in one and a half hours and plays these games relatively well, if they're the same price.

Does that make sense or am I talking babble?

I used to have a Dell Laptop, had it replaced four times in the first year. So I returned it back - got a full refund and brought a Mac. Havent looked back UNTIL TODAY.

My Mac has never failed which I have never experienced with all the other PCs/Laptops I had previously.
