Its a difficult position to recruit for as almost every academy set up and all the England age groups develop players with a back 4. However, whereas until 2000ish full backs all developed with a winger in front of them (and as a result didn't have the expectations going forwards) in more recent times teams playing either 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 (as all THFC Academies have done for last 15 years) full backs' roles have evolved to attack. Like I say i think this is mirrored across almost all other academy set ups.

As a result wing backs, especially in a Conte system (which as @milo mentioned) which is highly nuanced you either have to rely on converting an existing full back or you have to look abroad for a more natural wing back to really make the system work. I heard another podcast mention a couple of weeks ago (i think Extra Inch) that whilst both Poch and Conte use full backs/wing backs as part of an attacking system under Poch they were more of a shield (ie to press high up the pitch, occupy spaces and create spaces for central players) but under Conte they are more of a sword expected to contribute directly to goals. I think Conte will expect players in this position to contribute with 5+ goals per season; I'd liken their expected output levels (goals and assists) to traditional wingers in a 4-4-2 system.

Christian Ziege is perhaps the most natural wing back we've ever seen and it was such a shame that his injuries always overlapped with Steve Carr so the 2 of them never played together in Hoddle's time. Talking of that era I think Conte could have made Simon Davies into a bespoke Right Wing Back.

Might get a new lwb in without selling either of the current two. Sess might move to become the Son understudy in the Left Forward role. A position he played the season he scored 15 for Fulham in the Championship.

He'd be more likely to play on the right, if we did switch him to a forward position but he is the one who is better suited to a wingback role out of the two of them. There are rumours that Madrid might trigger the €40m release clause this summer, we should bite their hand off if they do.
