In fairness these are the same reporters who keep calling the French cops who continue to do nothing. I think this kind of reporting shames their authorities personally

They're not from Syria, they're from France.

They'll need more than a dinghy to get from Latakia.

To be fair the guys in the boat(there all guys) seem pretty happy. Odd that to be happy leaving the enlightened French and moving to the racist brexit loving Britain...

I hope they make it across safely. If their claim for asylum is legitimate I hope they end up being valuable contributors to our wonderful society. Amen.

Did you go by dinghy? I'm interested in how long that takes without stops on the way.

    I'll give you a clue; it's not.

They're not leaving a country that is a threat to them, they're leaving France. Their cars are fudging terrible and the countryside is full of peasants but they're safe enough.

They don't have to be leaving a country that is a threat to them immediately before they come to the UK. They don't have to claim asylum in the first (or second...) safe country they reach. Coming via France doesn't of itself make their claim non-legitimate.

Couldn't they just rock up on the shores of Jersey or Guernsey...it's all the UK?

I don't think they should be.

I'm perfectly happy for the UK to have a robust asylum system for anyone who needs to come here from somewhere they're in danger.

What isn't acceptable is taking every other country's cast offs like this. They're safe in France, there's no need to head here. It's like being offered a council house in Rotherham and insisting on one in Mayfair.

But they are allowed to pick the UK. Which is the key point. When you are desperate there is no law that says you have to take any option that is close to you. You can be selective.

Desperation and being selective are fairly exclusive don't you think?

If a person's situation is that bad that they qualify for asylum, then the difference between France and the UK should be in the margins.

Again they have the choice. And knowing some English and knowing that their is more opportunity for a better future is a legitimate reason to take the risk to get here. And overall migration has a net benefit to the economy. It's a win for all objective folk.

I have mentioned before that I think people should be free to move wherever and whenever they want.

But all the time we have a system whereby the government gives my money to other people, they should be applying for asylum from France where they are safe.
