ive had enough of relying on the full backs to give us any kind of attacking width.....our football is so obvious, pedestrian.

If only we had another left back at the club who could slot in when Rose got injured! Naughton is not it, and at the risk of being slated Benny might have done a job today.

We should never have moved Benny on.

If we couldn't sign Coentrao and AVB doesn't think Fryers is ready for first team then have to wonder why he let BAE go, even if he is inconsistent and injury prone, as without a left footed LB there's absolutely no width on left side when the LW is right footed.

And for all the malarkey about his attitude he gets what this game means and is solid, even when he brain farts. Naughton seems like he has no steel to him and look scared at LB.

1st goal was a foul, 2nd goal was offside and massively lucky, 3rd goal was on the break when were trying to get back into the game..

WHU had a lot of lot of luck today

AVB ****ed up tactics wise, the warning was there against CFC, no width, compacted midfield, really no idea what he was thinking

Walker / Naughton our weak link yet again

Townsend the best of the bunch

1st was a shove on Jan by Reid who the rebound then fell to him to hit it in on the 2nd attempt

Vaz Tey was embarassing how he celebrated after his almost chelsea like lucky goal too, but he looked a mile offside

Bugger, just wrote quite a long response to this on my phone that somehow disappeared, so my reply now may not be as good.

What I wanted to say was that I still don't believe this was some Big Sam master class. He probably can't believe his luck that we were so bad. To throw it back over to you, I think the fact that they had more shots than us and won 3-0 shows more that this result was such a freak, no way did they play for that. They sat back, packed the middle and hit us on the break. In a sense they tried exactly what Norwich did here but in that game we overran Norwich. Because those kind of tactics are risky in themselves. You sit back, you allow our good players to play near your box and if we score you have spent the whole game not trying to score and now have to come at us, allowing us to pick you off. 90% of teams will play the way Big Sam did today, and 70-80% of the time we will break it down.

Today I don't think it was a problem that he picked Defoe - if he had scored everyone would have been crowing about what good man management it was to give Defoe the nod, such is the world of football where there are no absolutes and perfectly reasonable decisions will get lambasted if the result isn't gained. It wasn't even a problem with the defence, or the midfield, it was that the whole team just was not bang at it. They were complacent, they thought everything would fall into place for them eventually and everything had gone a little too well for this new squad since it had been assembled. So in a way, I'm glad this result has happened to allow us to iron out some kinks, and iron out the mentality. Because despite players saying otherwise, I think they had bought into the hype a little and it's got them today. It's happened early in the season so we can hopefully push on from now, rather than have it happen in Spring and have it kick start our annual collapse.

What I will say though is that I think we actually got results last year and played worse (and we were utterly terrible today, which shows you how bad we played last year). But I think the difference was last year AVB was managing for the result, and would make bigger adjustments to say the shape or defensive line to see us through. But this year I think he backs the system over the result in itself, and believes it we rely on the system consistency will follow.

I think Walker being injured lead to complacency spreading throughout the rest of the team. They saw he wasn't bang at it and I think it affected them too. Of course there was also the fact that he couldn't then provide the width as well as he does, leaving it all on Naughton (who I don't think he anywhere near as bad as people think). Maybe we could have changed the system, but to what? Townsend on the left? We've seen plenty of games where Bale and Lennon on their natural flanks have been easily marked out of matches, and having all our width through Townsend would have seen that near certainly happen IMO.

We showed flickers of what we could do in the first 50/60 minutes which follows the pattern of a lot of games, only when we've gone on to get the goal. This time it all went wrong. But I'm not worried. This was a nice wake up call and we are a still a quality side.

In all fairness, they could have scored more. Don't really see how they were lucky besides the 2nd goal. They were up for it today and played very well.

They werent really in it threat wise until the 1st goal which was a foul, after that they gained confidence and we went to pot...

Did we force any saves from their keeper? Besides the Defoe 1 on 1?

They deserved to win today no matter how much some Spurs fans dislike West Ham.

That's the thing, in the end the result flattered them because of some of the things marky brought up. But accepting that and ignoring the 3-0 goal as we were obviously chasing the game it was overall a close game with an even number of chances both ways. At home to a bottom half side that's not really good enough.

We should have created more ourselves. Had we hammered them with chances and ended up losing 3-0 I wouldn't be nearly as unhappy.

The 3rd goal was always likely to happen as we flooded forward to try and save the game, but I honestly thought at the very least we would utterly dominate possession and they would park the bus, but that's not what happened. I don't know what the stats were but they kept the ball better than I thought they would. Diame gave us a torrid time, they won most of the fifty fifties and looked dangerous from set pieces whereas we can't beat the first bloody man from a corner.

There was nothing lucky whatsoever about their 3rd goal. We defended poorly today.

I actually expected us to have more lol.

Yes they had moments of luck, but I honestly don't think we can say we were unlucky today. 3-0 might have flattered them, but 2-0 wouldn't have IMO.

Our possession advantage was largely in completely harmless areas of the pitch. We didn't translate that possession advantage into chances. Possession for the sake of possession when you're at 0-0 or losing at home to a bottom half team is worthless.

They had a plan and stuck to it well thats for sure, they were pretty woeful in attack until they got the 1st which shouldve been given a foul, that changed the game, the 2nd was ridiculous, the 3rd was a great goal from Morrison aided by **** defending, him and Reid look good players

Thought we were in control of the game at 0-0, just needed to up the urgency and we'd get the goal (like we did the 1st 5 mins of the 2nd half) but then they got the goal from a set piece and after that they really deserved it.
