New laptop advice

Any advice on a new laptop would be great as haven't bought a pc or laptop for ages so a bit out of touch. From what i gather Intel is better than AMD? I'm looking to spend £300-£350 max. Any thoughts on these or any other suggestions welcome. Ideally I would want 750gb + HDD

Don't get one that has an annoyingly loud clicking mouse. Grrrrrrr.

Never RED.

My HP Pavilion has an annoying mouse click, the shell around the screen can be a bit fragile (thin plastic). That is on a considerably more expensive DV7 so worth trying them and checking how they close, how robust they are.

I don't think Intel or AMD makes a massive difference, they both make good chips, although id avoid celerons. I'd also avoid Acer laptops as I've known 2 people that have had them and the build quality wasn't great on either.

Your best bet is probably to go to your local pcworld and have look at them all and then take a note of the good ones and look for the best deal online later.

I’m guessing at that price range you’re not looking to play games? It’s a shame you need the storage space as otherwise I’d recommend looking at the chromebooks given your budget – I’ve got the Samsung arm one (£229) and it’s fantastic for pretty much everything I need it for, largely browsing and office work where a tablet falls short on the move.

Google docs is perfectly fine for me instead of full blown ms office and speed wise you’d need to spend 2-3x as much on a windows machine that can perform as well. New Haswell range coming out next month too which should not only provide more options but also help to drive forward functionality. The only things they’re really no good for are video editing, anything graphically intensive (ie.games) or for having plenty of storage (best you can get is 320gb on the asus version, all the rest have ssd for speed).

Otherwise you’re going down the best route really, try and keep an eye out for a refurbished model from a few years ago that has got good reviews, buying new at that price will only get you a machine with poor build quality and likely thermal issues.
