Lucas Moura

Plan and tactics, but made possible because of the game conditions. In most games there won't be the space for him to do that.

The big question for me is if we can find tactics/instructions that make him more effective when playing in different conditions, different phases of play. I'm not holding my breath. But his hard work, intensity, ability to beat a man and multiple men when I'm the right situation makes him a useful player either way. Good enough to start every week? Not so sure.

A more narrow 4-3-3 might suit him well, the problem is that if the plan is to play a more defensive right back we need that right sided attacker to provide width. He can do that, but he's not very effective there when teams sit deeper.

I struggle to see the tactical fix for it.
The fix for him is passing the ball quicker in some games and holding on in others
He has generally played the same way until this summer. It’s possible he has been asked to changed his game. It’s possible it’s early season and he is fitter than everyone else

How do you know what's to a set plan and when it's a free reign?

I mean Son is a very patchy player, long spells off form then prolonged purple patch - that doesn't scream excelling on instruction to me

Son (separate conversation) is a high energy player who's patches as you call them often coincide with being overplayed ..

See his good streaks at start of season (last one as example) or typically his immediate impact when back from injury.

Surely every manager that's ever managed Lucas must have seen that and tried to change it at least somewhat? Thought there was a period under Mourinho when he looked better at not just running down blind alleys against organised teams, but it didn't really stick.

If he can change, great. If not we have a specialist that's very good in some game conditions and more decent to good in others while always working hard. That's not the worst thing.

I was about to make this exact point. It is very noticeable that he's moving the ball on quicker than he used to, and doing it more frequently. Nuno has been his ear about that I imagine and he's definitely taken that coaching on board.
That’s exactly my point
He is being coached to play a certain way
Under someone like Jose…. That was less apparent

I agree with all who say his passing has improved, but his touch is actually amazing. One-touch passes/flicks are so difficult to defend against but he executes them deftly and he generally keeps up the speed of the counter attack.

Not really.
Depending on what exactly he likes about Bolsonaro, it might make him even better.
(I wondered how long before someone mentioned the B man, and had you down as one of the possible biters!)

Can you suggest anything liking about Bolsonaro? I’m all eyes (and ears)…
