Interesting.... though it is the Daily Star, one must point out!

Does have some sense... proven winner, and would allow us to sell both Trippier and the waste of space that is Aurier, and still have KWP and especially Foyth as cover, ensuring that Alves will be judiciously used for the big games against the top 6 and in the CL...

Tottenham make Dani Alves approach with Mauricio Pochettino weighing up right-back options

TOTTENHAM have been in contact with Dani Alves about a potential move to the Premier League this summer.

Tottenham have been in contact with Dani Alves about a potential summer move - Castles (Pic: GETTY)
That’s according to journalist Duncan Castles, who claims Spurs are preparing to offload both Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier in the summer transfer window.

Alves, 36, is available to sign on a free after leaving Paris St-Germain upon the expiry of his contract.

Reports have suggested that Barcelona, who the Brazilian enjoyed eight successful years with before moving to France, are open to their former right-back returning to the Nou Camp.

However, Castles insists the Catalans face competition from Spurs - who are determined to fulfil boss Mauricio Pochettino’s ambitions this summer.

“I understand that there’s been contact with Tottenham Hotspur about the possibility of Dani moving there”

“So [Barcelona is] one option for him, but as far as I understand he doesn’t have a formal contract offer from Barcelona yet,” he said on The Transfer Window podcast.

“I’m told he also has major clubs interested in him in Italy. He definitely has the option to return to Brazil and play at one of the top clubs there for the next few seasons.

“But if he’s gonna stay in Europe, he has a long-held ambition to play in the Premier League.

“And I understand that there’s been contact with Tottenham Hotspur about the possibility of Dani moving there in what would seem quite a strange addition for Tottenham, given that this is a club that’s focused on younger players, players whose value will increase, players they can get on reasonably cheap salaries.

Castles claims Tottenham have been in contact with the Brazilian about a potential summer move (Pic: GETTY)

“But bear in mind that Tottenham are looking to change things because of Mauricio Pochettino, for his demands to take the club to another level.

“This summer, they’ve already put a record transfer fee down for Tanguy Ndombele from Olympique Lyon. They have other significant targets in mind. They’ve made a big bid for Giovani Lo Celso at Real Betis but not met that club’s asking price as yet."

Castles then goes onto explain how Trippier, heavily linked with a move to Juventus of late, and Aurier could be sold to make room for Alves in north London this summer.

He continued: “They are also trying to shift players out, and two of the players who are informally being placed on the market are Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier - both right-backs.

“They have a young right-back in their squad, but if they were to move both of those players, you could see them needing an experienced figure there.
Spurs are prepared to offload Kieran Trippier and Serge Aurier this summer, says Castles (Pic: GETTY)
“You then suddenly, because of PSG’s decision, have the option to recruit one of the best players in European football for the position, a player who has a record of leadership, of being a symbol within a dressing room, of pushing teams onward to achieve things.

“If you’re in Tottenham’s situation, where you haven’t actually won a club trophy under your manager, you even have a manager who’s not won a club trophy, to have a proven winner with the experience of getting clubs over the line to titles, is clearly something that would be of appeal.

“And it can be done relatively cheaply, in that there’s no transfer fee involved, you will probably be looking for a contract which allows him to get to the World Cup, so probably being structured as a two-year deal with a one-year option - assuming he meets certain performance targets during his first two years at the club.

“I’m not saying this deal is going to happen, but I’m saying that it is an option that is being discussed and that Tottenham are in the chase to secure a kind of player that I think we’ve not seen at that area of London for a good long length of time.”

I would be very happy with this. Despite his age, he's a quality player and still runs all day.
He's a winner and signing him will definitely improve us.

I can't see Alves happening, he's 36 and would get skinned by the pace of the Premier League. Surely Poch can get Foyth playing to a better standard, week in week out than Trippier or Aurier managed.

So that’s now Dani Alves, Dani Olmo and Dani Ceballos.

    Who’s next? Dani...Minogue?!

Possibly... but Alves has been the equivalent of Usain Bolt in football in terms of pace and acceleration. Bolt didn't get skinned even when he was in his thirties... I would hazard to say that even at 36, he still has more pace than most Premiership fullbacks.

Dani Alves still has it … he may not last the whole season with his blood and thunder approach, however he could be our Edgar Davids

Would definitely take him! Perfect "stop gap" until we can find a younger replacement. Very good defender, and even better going forwards. His experience would be very welcome.

I recall when Juande Ramos took over there were four players I hoped he could - and would - bring to WHL. Alvez, David Villa and Freddie Kanoute.

Would have been ideal then. We’re not being linked with many right backs at the moment though and if it was taking a chance on someone as experienced as him or what we have now for the season ahead, I would take the first option each time.

Would be good for a couple of seasons. An experienced head in the group. Someone who has been there and won a LOT. For free, even with consequently inflated salary seems like a good option.

Absolutely - Davies is probably the slowest full back we have, yet arguably the best defender.....

I'd give him about 15 minutes before the pace and physicality of the EPL permanently overwhelms him.

It would be a bit of a Nicola Berti/Mousa Saib type signing - top player, but no way they should have come to England at that stage in their career.

Zhirkov at Chelsea was a similar type mistake - great player, but wrong time, wrong place
