Coming back home today and my oil light started flashing on, then by the time I got home it had come on and stayed on. Got out the car to find oil was coming out the front grill and around the headlight so left it a few hours to cool down. Just gone back out to have a look and the underside of the bonnet is covered in oil and there's a pool of it in the bottom left hand corner where it's gathered. I've checked the oil stick and it's completely bone dry.
What I want to know is what sort of damage is likely to have occurred?
I plan on phoning the insurance company in the morning but just wanted a bit of warning of what to expect beforehand.
    Thanks.

What make and model of car. Do not say Lamborghini...
Disconnect the battery and don't let anyone turn the engine over.

Do you think you might have left the oil cap off? I did that once but didn't drain it, just made a mess. Garage did a pressure wash and it was all fine. On the other hand, my sister once had a car which developed a severe oil leaking problem. She drove it one day and the oil ran down, engine seized and the car had to be written off.

Apart from leaking oil possibly you haven't described any other problems. I'd get it checked out by a garage first. Maybe top it up with oil now and see if it's still full in the morning? But I'm no car expert.

assuming it's not the cap coming/being off you've blown something

any other symptoms, noises, loss of power, smoke from the exhaust when changing gear

any idea if it's still leaking (obviously very hard to tell)

I had a leaking oil problem about 2 years a go where it would occasionally drip a little bit onto the floor, this happened on and off for a few months until it started to get worse then took it to the garage to get it fixed. No problems since.
I had to take the car to the garage about a month or so ago as rain water was getting in through somewhere and running down into the passenger footwell but i'm pretty sure this is unrelated.

edit - just to add, when I lifted the bonnet earlier it looked like it was the front left side covered in oil, the right hand side was fine.

any idea how they fixed it?

what's on the stained side, oil cap, dip stick?

is there any obvious point of exit from the block for the oil?

You've probably ripped your flog socket. You're gonna need a new sun roof and an almond scented wunderbaum.

I think you could be in for a world of pain to be honest.. maybe you are lucky but you probably done irreparable damage.

You need to hope that it leaked the majority of oil when it was idle.

Worse case is Head Gasket.. leak around the engine block..

    Oil Pump could be ****ed
    Filter come loose
Tubing come loose, look for pipes in that area that are not connected now.

Whatever you do as said above, do not start it up again.

You need to really get a mechanic. How old is the vehicle. Gasket could mean its done.

This, supposedly, is the engine bay for a Corsa life. [IMG]

If you still have the yellow cap where it says Ecotec then prepare yourself for bad news, hopefully the fact you got home means that you might be lucky and not damaged too much.

If the yellow cap is not there, then that should be the problem. Only question I would ask is that if the cap was secured properly then you had a big pressure build up to blow it off.

How long since you last checked the oil prior to the journey when you had the issue?

I've had the car about 5 years but I think it's about 9-10 years old but I do very low mileage. Apart from work and back which is a 10-12 minute round trip the only other use is for football which yesterday was only a 22 mile round trip. The cap is on and i'm just about to phone the insurance company to send someone out.
The last time the oil was checked was when I had it MOT/Serviced at the end of April. I know that sounds a long time but the car gets very little use.

Possible oil pressure switch or filter where the leak is then if the cap is still there, a sudden loss I would imagine you would have stopped sooner than your home.

Insurance company don't think they would be able to fix it so i'll have to wait until tomorrow now to get in touch with the garage.

Just an oil switch! Garage only charged me £80 all together. I was expecting a lot worse.

Great stuff.. Must admit I thought you were doomed

Looking on google and what they found as the cause it seems that its common for the plastic on the oil switch to split on the Corsa. Never knew that it would cause the oil leaks though. Heads up.. the switch is quite cheap under £10 and is like putting a spark plug in. Learn where it is. Save a lot of hassle next time the lights on the oil flashes.. For the £80 did they top up the oil and give it a pressure wash. No extra damage done, do tappets sound ok.
