£500 Gaming machine

I have gone over and over again, back and forth regarding graphics cards, having the GTX 470 myself it kinda makes me side with the 660
Do you have any benchmark comparisons for all cards like this link. http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/video_lookup.php?gpu=Radeon+HD+7850

I was basing on performance for price, as initially you were after saving the pounds for the build. There is most likely a few on the net but I found this one which near enough matches up to what I said in that the 660 is slightly better but for performance and value then the 7850.
http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-HD-7850-vs-GeForce-GTX-660

Here is the performance chart from your original link too which bears the same, it all comes down to choice and as you have been using the GeForce then you have a good idea how it runs etc in real world.

Re the CPU, can understand your logic behind it and perfectly understandable for the backup as such. Think you would be very unlucky though to have a GPU fail after three years (warranty) when it is just left at stock clocks etc, but as you say backup is handy.

Thats exactly it yes, unless you have any internal USB3.0 ports on the MB in which case they simply plug into those. Though looking at the MB you're looking at it seems you will have to use the two rear USB3.0 external ports. So you'll basically lose them. As I say this is what the Z11 is like (which is supposed to be a superior case) so I imagine its the same on the one you're looking at.

Damn, looks like I'm looking for a different case. ....aarrrghh 'Will it end'

It's funny how the case has become the hardest thing to choose

Your mobo should have headers, the adapter would work - usb cable from top would plug straight into it.

Yes going by the picture of the MB on amazon it'll definitely work, the USB3.0 port is next to the MB power socket. Though be aware it'll stick out fairly far. Depends how neat you want the setup to look :)

Nice find Trixster, never seen one of those before. May have to buy one for myself :)

Regarding the top i/o's for the case, can you simply not buy a usb header adapter and then connect to the mobo's sockets to save usb ports on the back?

Edit - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Header-Ports-Adapter-Connector-Converter/dp/B005IVLK3W

yes, I do believe this is the way around that scenario. I could though have 'another' look at cases and add the cost of the adapters to see if there is anything.

Plan for afternoon

Tidy up work I got to do
Order parts
Watch Tottenham
Open my PC and have a clean.
Think about case and order later tonight. Decide on Zalman and adapters or another case

Cheers guys for the help.. to write things down and get others opinions is really apprieciated. Opens one's mind to other ways and suggestions I wouldn't have thought about. Thanks

lol, your killing me. Although that does look interesting.

For starters you could take away the WD Hard drive as I have one here and you have the SSD already there.

Swap the overclocked chip for the non overclocked version.

Change the heatsink for a corsair H60 2013 version

:-k

uh oh, we're creating a monster now :D

Bit of a touch, when ordering the GTX card there is a promotion at the minute whereby you get the new Batman game for free on purchasing a GTX. Luckily because of the new consoles I had put a break on new games. This has saved me buying the game .. £40 saved. :) I think I am going to nab my nephews voucher.. and I am going to hell. haha

Ordered last night mate, I was given a late minute directive by my nephew and he asked if there could be a colour scheme.
And believe it or not he also phoned to say he had chosen a bloody case.. all that time choosing the right one for him too.

It guts me though, he has chosen fire as the theme and wants red.

So I changed the motherboard too this http://www.msi.com/product/mb/Z77A-G43-GAMING.html#overview
Ram to this http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-12800cl9d-8gbxl
The case he has chosen is http://www.overclockers.com/win-gt1-midtower-case-review/

Also something I had to do regarding the PSU, hopefully it will not be too affected as its still nearly double what we need.

You cannot get the Corsair CX600M anywhere for love or money, if you can its added with £10 delivery. So I had to opt for the Corsair CX500M. tut

Things I found.. Its worth trying to get the items in fewer places, for example it was beneficial to get the PSU at Amazon as everywhere seemed to add a premium delivery on it. Double normally to Amazon's first class on everything (5 items).

Rechecking the prices at Amazon also found price changes.. like the CPU was 151, and not £156 as stated on PCpicker, I kinda ended up saving another £10 by double checking the Amazon price.

Congrats on ordering mate, it'll be a lovely build. Really hope you and your nephew have great fun building it together :)

[-X Disown and disinherit immediately ;)

Spent a bit more than the 500 then, should be a very nice system for him though, hope the build stage goes to plan.

He had saved for it.. he has £720 saved as he asked for just money for his birthday 2 weeks ago from literally everyone so it has enabled him to move to another level. He thinks the build is that price but I paid the rest. He won't know that though. Let him think he saved and paid for it all. Personally I would have thought it better for him to get an xbox one and a tablet with the money but he was adamant, he wanted one to learn and do homework on in the future. He is like a sponge right now and its probably good to get him into computers prior to Year one of senior school. His words were, I want something that can do everything.

He doesn't have a monitor yet. He is borrowing mine as I can get by using the IPAD for browsing or use the big screen in the lounge till Christmas, and now he has top of his santa list a nice tv with HD freeview. Don't see the point in getting a monitor because you need to get speakers as well and that can be like £170. So might as well get a Samsung 32" LED. Means he doesn't have two screens in there too. No doubt in a couple of years he would want his own telly so makes sense.

I have told him I am not happy about the red. He just giggled.
