Harry Winks

Carroll always looked tidy. But Winks has already shown he has ability in the areas Carroll was always flawed in. He's much more physical and aggressive, but most importantly he's assertive and pro-active in his play. He's young Modric to Caroll's young Samways.

That's a very good description of the difference between Carroll and Winks. Carroll is generally static and passes the ball around neatly, though generally sideways and without really making an impact; Winks plays the ball forwards more and, importantly, runs with the ball as well so hurts teams more

I'm happy to get myself giddy over him, he already looks the part. Said before, he doesn't lose the ball and always looks for the forward pass. I sincerely hope we have another Harry gem here from our academy.

I know it's heresy to say anything positive about Samways but I thought had more aggression and goal threat than Carroll has every shown.

I quite liked Samways too actually. But he was far better suited to a slower gentler league (he thrived in Spain) than the hustle and bustle of early 90s English football. For the sake of his career Carroll needs to follow his example and move abroad.

winks has done as well as could be expected of him, especially when thrown into situations like last 20 of Chelsea game, looking to close out.

That said, to me (opinion), he's a long way from being first team material, and that may say something more about our first team than Winks. Wouldn't be surprised to see a loan for him next year.

Remember that litre step over and go for VDV against Inter? Sublime. Hope our Modric-lite Harry can do the business for us in a similar fashion!

I feel Poch rates him too much to send him out on loan

I don't doubt Poch rates him, but if you look at next season, you would expect we will pick up another midfielder & striker in summer. How does Winks get regular starts? If we could find the right loan where he could start most/all matches, might be best thing for him.

i don't see us being in the market for another CM tbh - think we're set with the 4 we have.

unless Dembeles fitness long term is considered a risk

I think if you look at the rumours/targets, we will likely be in for another midfielder, may not be CM/DM, maybe more wide options, but it is still an additional body that needs to fit into a limited number of positions. Add in a fit Lamela and Jan/Toby, so Dier potentially going back to midfield as well, gets crowded pretty quick.

i don't really follow transfer news stories unless they get a lot of traction on here so im unaware of any links to central midfielders tbh mate - anything that stands out?

i don't see the need for an extra body in midfield with Dier/Wanyama and Dembele/Winks - we have Carroll atm as 5th choice and Poch has used him in the past fairly regular but he isnt getting a look in at all atm and that's even with one of our four standing in as a CB for quite a while - i just don't see the need really, not when Winks is looking very comfortable with the game time that is coming his way
