What do people on here think of them? I'm changing jobs in January, this recruiter actually got me a £5k pay rise. He tried the old "can you start this month" tactic on me so he could get his commission early but I didn't oblige.

I've had mostly bad experiences with them on the whole. They pretend to be your mate and acting in your self interest but when it comes to signing contracts etc they really try to put pressure on you.

Also been low balled as high as £2k by employers during interviews after recruiters had exaggerated the salary (sure others on here have experienced that).

They're basically massive a-holes.
 
Massive arseholes.

Reluctantly I call them a necessary evil. They are basically nothing more than a human search feature these days.

Much like estate agents - although not quite as bad as estate agents.
 
Recruiters are pure sales people nothing more or less, the majority tend to be "second hand cars salesman" but some are able to be more useful - all the ones I know are the 2:2's at Uni who cant really make it in anything else. If you are good at it though there is a lot of commission to be made.
 
waste of spaces, they talk loudly to "get their point across", wear a lot of aftershave/perfume/bling and none I ever met went to uni, couple of blokes I used to know back in the day were former painter and decorators but they had the gift of the gab which is all you need and wormed their way into IT recruiting.
 
They serve a purpose i guess, i hate searching for Jobs so recruiters can do that for me. I am fussy and i tell them right at the start. Most put a job across for me and i dont like it and they dont phone back! lol

I once had a little row with one, Stupid girl calls me up, i said i don't like the sound of it as its a boring product. She calls back 2 minutes later and said that the job i was doing previous was a boring product. She said it in a agitated way. I told her in no uncertain terms to give up her job as a recruiter.

They are a necessary evil as others have stated.

But as an employer, I'm keen to know if the way they operate has ever caused you any grief? I went to an interview a few months ago, the recruiter told me the salary was x amount, but then I went to meet the director of the company in the second interview and he said he could only offer me 2 grand lower than the bottom of the pay scale that the recruiter sold it to me at. I didn't take the job and told both of them where to go. The company blamed the recruiter for exaggerating the salary of course. I got the impression that the company were really tinkled off with the recruiter as my experience was a big plus for them and they were disappointed that we couldn't reach an agreement.

Even if I had taken the job, companies/recruiters don't realise that you don't go into the job with that buzz you normally get from starting a new job.

We've had the odd one or two that was no good.

In general, they want to keep your account so will try and do well by you. If you use one a few times in a row they'll look out for you as you can keep their commission ticking over.

Two different recruiters then contacted me about the same job I turned shortly after :p and I filled them in on what happened. Is it possible they gave the original recruiter the boot or do companies use more than one at the same time even for the same role?

If I don't have one that I've used lately, I'll send out a request to 3 or 4. They will give me CVs of people already on their list and then go out and find someone for the role from there.

Usually personal details are stripped from CVs and formatted in the company's standard format, meaning we could theoretically get the same CV twice and not notice.

What happened to putting an ad for the position your company needs to fill - in the main newspapers.
Sometimes this meant putting ads in the UK etc. as the skills required were not available in the country I was working in
I used to do this all the time - whichever country I was working in at that time.
Sure, we got a lot of applications.
I got the HR people to shortlist the applicants, and interviewed each - many times traveling to whatever country the applicant was in.
Had great results.

As for finding a job for myself - never let a recruiters get near me. Was always head hunted.

I don't have time to write an ad and place it.

Far easier for someone to pop into the office with coffee and a sandwich and sort it out for me.
