e-mail problem for the techies

Crawley

Board Legend
Guys, this is probably very basic, but..........

On the home PC, used by the entire family, we run Windows Live mail as the e-mail client, with 3 seperate e-mail accounts.
Normally, we just open up the e-mail once the PC has booted, no problem.

Today, I got a pop-up window (from Windowslivemail) saying "The e-mail address or password is incorrect. please try again"

I never sign-in to access this, so had no trace of password, so tried my basic password for the system. No luck.

Followed the forgotten password process........seemed to have worked.

Until this evening.

Same pop up appeared when the missus tried to go into her e-mail account, and the same has just appeared on mine again.

Any answers? (sensible ones, DHSF)

Even if I wanted to make a sensible suggestion - I couldnt. I dont have a clue what you are chattin about.

has someone changed the password on one of the accounts?

try and login to the Webmail interface of each account to check you are using the correct credentials

Sensible answer, plus ask others (if it's their accounts) if they changed one.

No password changes. It was fine when I turned it off last night, and I was first to boot it up today.
On each account, when the window appears, it has the correct e-mail address showing, and the "remember me" box ticked.

Strangely, i can still get into the e-mails, by closing the pop-up window. But it soon re-appears.

are there messages in an outbox anywhere?

might be a send mail request causing the pop up, possible one of the email account providers has started to require authentication for outgoing mail

Nope. Nothing untoward at all. No outgoing mail, nothing.

I use g-mail most of the time. I use the windows live for my old Virgin media account, and let all the spam go there.
But my wife and son are more regular users.

Strangely, without doing anything, the issue seems to have gone away this morning.

maybe just a microsoft issue yesterday?

MS were having issues with Hotmail yesterday, was reported on their website. Don't know if it'd be the same system though.

Probably then, as the two are linked. All the support links on Microsoft sites show hotmail support under windows live.

Thanks, Vinnie. I should have known :)
It was either that or to advocate kicking it in the sponge. Sometimes a bit of old skool advice is the best. :)

PS. Use Outlook as your email programme (http://kat.ph/ is your friend). You won't go back to webmail.

PPS. I'd make you a copy but apparently it's not the done thing to copy software for people you know, my mate had the Quran on DVD, I asked him to burn me a copy and now he won't talk to me. :(

PPPS. Can we change the thread title? It's either an email problem for numpties or email problem for techies to sort out for you but what you've described is not an email problem for techies. :)
