    I take your point and I'm not disagreeing, but for me, it's both a question of quality in terms of technical standard and of quality in terms of character (which includes style and the other factors you allude to). I think those things are convolved.

    It sounds to me as though Emery has got himself into a more traditional managerial role at Villa, so has more say than most, rather than running around trying to negotiate the layers of the corporate onion.

    He never really looks fully engaged to me, but perhaps that's just how he is. I'd say I need to see more from him before I'd be overjoyed with our acquiring his services on a permanent basis, though. Well done to all concerned for finishing in the top 8, but that doesn't really tell us...

    I remember reading (I think it was in the book The Numbers Game) that there's a statistical argument that goals you don't concede are worth more points-wise than goals you score. Whether that's really true or not, I couldn't really say.

    The obvious danger is that they underestimate the scale of the emergency (perhaps thinking it's just the same as last season). Things may look a lot more precarious come 1 March, by which time it'll be too late to do anything but sack the manager and hope for a dead-cat bounce. Just saying....

    It is puzzling, to say the least, why Frank's words are so at odds with the way the players appear to be coached to play. The only conclusion I've been able to come to is that he doesn't really trust them to play football, because he thinks that, as soon as they come under the slightest...

    There's no need to ignore anything. We've basically been on a downward trend quality-wise for five or six seasons. Where we are now is just about on the line. Kane and Son carried us for years.
