*** OMT Tottenham Hotspur v Aston Villa FC ***

He really did. He even built us a functional squad that fit well together. Compared to some of the best modern managers tactically I don't think Redknapp stacks up. But the impression of him as just a wheeler dealer signing whoever is available to tell players to run around a bit I think is...

    Conor Gallagher

    Welcome. Please be excellent.

Fabio Paratici - Also Sporting Director

Good luck to him maybe I guess. While the timing isn't great and he has some strengths that we'll miss I'm not sure he was the right man for the job. Hope we get a very good replacement in fairly quickly.

Frank Give him time or get rid?

Think it was better earlier this season. Injuries and fatigue a part of that probably. How easily our high press is bypassed combined with how rarely we win possession definitely is a concern. But I do think a high press is something Frank wants from the team in phases.

    Conor Gallagher

I mostly agree with your point. But also think that maybe if he got to play there sometimes he could develop in those aspects. Maybe one day he'll become a 10, but for now he seems much more suited to a (somewhat) deeper role. His best games last season came there. And we have the partner for a...

Frank Give him time or get rid?

I think it's in part difficulties finding players that can do that while also being defensively and physically good enough for that role in the PL. Maddison was massively important to us in the previous two seasons and a big miss now.

    Conor Gallagher

I agree on what you like about him. What I don't like about him is that while better than those other 8s we already have he's not the profile we're missing. To me we have massive ball progression issues and if we're going to spend big or biggish on a midfielder I would like it to be someone who...

Frank Give him time or get rid?

Had better numbers at Chelsea. More similar to Bentancur here pre-Frank. I think he's better at it than those stats playing under Simeone would indicate, but not sure he's good enough at it to make a big impact.

Frank Give him time or get rid?

Agreed. Our ball progression is really bad. And that's rather important for a football team. Will be interesting to see if Gallagher can improve that if he's signed. And if we move for anyone else that can improve that this window.

I agree. And part of what I meant by "will overplay important starters". The necessity of the next result gets so important that options aren't used.

    Xavi Simons

He's starting to look the player he is, having adjusted a bit. He's a very good player, and at just 22 still room to develop further. Seems to have a good attitude too. Been a tough spell here so far, but knuckles down, keeps trying, doesn't hide and works hard. Still think the key with him is...

If that is true (big if) that would actually make some sense. Would require a significant clear out in midfield at some point though.

I think he's an upgrade on our other options for the more box to box role of the deep two. Assuming Frank allows him to make those forward runs enough of the time. Think he's good enough on the ball to be a good combination player for Xavi in those advanced areas. Not sure he adds enough ball...

    Conor Gallagher

Sarr and Bentancur are quite good at that too, not sure there will be a big difference in our pressing. As per our previous conversation about Bentancur I think Gallagher is more secure in possession and while not a deep playmaker for me quite capable of some decent pass and move play - while...

    Transfer thread

Good player, very good even. Will probably come in and make a quick impact and be useful. I think his qualities on the ball get somewhat underestimated, he's tidy. But I struggle to see that he's good enough to make a big dent in our ball progression issues through midfield. Better than Sarr on...

Frank Give him time or get rid?

Different yes. I'm unsure on the extent of that difference. Didn't watch them that much, but what I did see it wasn't like a night and day difference between that and what we're seeing here in terms of style. I agree that's the old adage. It's one I don't see much current truth value to for a...

    25/26 Injury and illness thread

The same spiral as last season. Injuries breed injuries and a manager under pressure, lacking good options and managing a team struggling for form will overplay important starters.

Perhaps we should try training on a football pitch rather than in a nutshell? That doesn't sound ideal at all... (Sorry, just trying to lighten the mood)

    Transfer thread

We don't need an expensive signing that isn't quite what we need. Would happily take the right player(s) on deadline day rather than moving quickly and not getting what we need. Even in the tricky spot we find ourselves in now. Hopefully we're somehow keeping things quiet despite having...

If I couldn't handle disappointments I would have either had to stop following Spurs or been chronically depressed by now 😉
