    Official - Defoe

Re: Jermain Defoe Try reading the 2nd sentence after that first one! I agree about appearances v goals not being a very accurate representation. I was saying starts v goals usually being fairly close to minutes v goals. Because the minutes gained or lost from subbed on or off tend to cancel...

Re: Jermain Defoe Which generally tend to cancel each other out. Which means starts v goals is usually fairly close to minutes v goals. And on that he'd still be closer 1 in 3 in the league than 1 in 2. In reality, I think he goes on runs where he is a 1 in 2 striker but he'll also have...

    Official - Defoe

Re: Jermain Defoe Doesn't have enough to his game beyond goals, is the obvious answer, I would have thought. Even then, I note his overall strike rate based on those stats is only a goal every 2 and a half games. Which is really very, very average.

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

I agree with the general trust. I would think a more accurate statement would to be say he has a good enough squad to be doing better than 8th, at this stage. And certainly has a good enough squad for us to be producing better performances because we are lucky to be even 8th on that evidence...

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Indeed but why be worried about Saudi Sportswashing Machine and not WBA?

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Why would Saudi Sportswashing Machine be up there based on one decent season? More likely to be Everton and maybe WBA as this year's surprise. We're 9 points behind them, ffs!

Just realised I posted this the day before Di Matteo got the boot!

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Agree with that. I was broadly defending the chopping and changing approach earlier in this thread but the whole point of that is that you do it until you arrive at someone exceptional. And mourinho firmly falls into that category!

Travel advice for the West Ham game

From Enfield Town.... that is about 5 miles drive from where he is! It is 8 miles to Tottenham! Enfield is a big 'ol borough. As someone said above, Enfield Lock station would be the better bet but no idea about the trains from there on a Sunday matchday.

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

In recent times? At specific clubs after struggling for years? Like who? And do they counter the numbers who've come in and not started slow? Moyes, Wenger, Redknapp, Mourinho, to name just a few? And why it is far from the truth? Jol got 5th twice and was replaced. You think AVB is sure in 8th...

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

They should have done. It looks exactly like stability for the sake of it, based on goodwill. Chopping and changing until you get someone exceptional is as good a tactic as any these days. Didn't work out too bad for Chelsea last season, even if RDM isn't actually all that exceptional (which I...

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Yep. Perhaps more accurately, the early Wenger at Arsenal. I think he's been living on goodwill there for some time now.

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

As I said, he won the double in his first full season. Qualified for the CL in his first season. Hardly clogging it for seasons. And that was from chopping and changing... Bruce Rioch, had a season and a bit, took them over having finished 12th and got them back into Europe and was replaced by...

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Wenger won the double in his first full season, to be fair.

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Yes but there is a limit to this. I'm not even talking top 4 here. But he needs top 6. We are 8th now. We finished 8th in 2009 from a virtual standing start after 8 games, with a hopelessly unbalanced squad for 2/3rds of the season and not much depth either, for that matter. So the excuses can...

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

This is the conventional wisdom but I think there is a case, in the modern game, for chopping and changing until you can get a guy who hits the ground running and is clearly exceptional compared to every other manager who always 'needs time' to get it right. I wouldn't say it has got to that...

    Andre Villas-Boas - Head Coach

Yes, City were spending big. Exactly. And a Liverpool in decline in a still a different proposition from the Bolton's, Reading's and Blackburn's of the world that Jol finished immediately above. Nothing wrong with that, of course. You can only beat what is put in front of you but Redknapp's...

Who is the best Spurs manager/coach of the Premier League era?

Very doubtful. Only Liverpool and Villa in 6th and 7th would have had anything like comparable talent and they had considerably more clout that West Ham in the first place!

Who is the best Spurs manager/coach of the Premier League era?

    It really wasn't. Here is the squad the year they finished 5th: 12 Shaka Hislop (Hammer of the Year) GK 37 0 2 0 2 0 July 1998 Saudi Sportswashing Machine 15 Rio Ferdinand CB 31 0 1 0 1 0 November 1995 Academy 19 Ian Pearce CB 33 0 1 0 2 0 September 1997 Blackburn Rovers 6 Neil Ruddock CB 27 0 2...
