I watch football because I enjoy seeing skilful players score great goals, produce brilliant passes, and find ways to unlock stubborn defences. I'm not against great defending at all, but attacking quality is what makes the game special for me. I don't want to tune into the World Cup final in two weeks' time only to find the spectacle diminished because players like Messi or Mbappé have been kicked out of the tournament through cynical, overly physical play.

By all means, don’t make life easy for the best players—but don't reward thuggery. Paraguay got what they deserved last night: nothing.

Exactly though, France reacted, tremendous plan that paid off for them at the time, overall though they came up short.

I like both TBH, its a battle of styles, I have not really enjoyed seeing teams beaten by 3/4 goals because everyone adopting the same style against France, last nights game was the best I saw them involved in because it was a battle and the better side came out as winners. All in all, enjoyable
 
When you reach the point where getting a result is all that matters you're not in a sporting contest. You're just doing a job and ripping off most of the people paying to watch. It's difficult for some people to grasp the idea of fair play and respecting your opponents. I just despair for the future good manners and respect for others are redundant in this century irrespective of age, nationality, race, gender.

The football fever is crazy over here, even my 70 year old mother will be watching tonight, and she can’t tell an offside flag from a pint of Guinness. I was walking through the city center here in Oslo a couple of days ago and every single conversation I overheard were about the match. Suddenly the 50 year old lady at work who has always complained when we’ve been talking football has opinions on the starting line up, haha.

I reckon we’ll probably lose, but there’s little pressure on us, and nothing but pressure on Brazil. Could play into our hands.

You are moving the goalposts here from his football opinion to his political. He can defend himself well enough on that without me, but just to make a point that having a simple view of intolerance of any form of bigotry is a coherent worldview IMO, and not too far from my own thinking. There was a line crossed on this site a few days ago, which you called out as I recall, as did I. Where that line is different for every person, but as I say, that is not something I need to get involved with discussing on his behalf.
