The *WHEN* we go down thread

An occasionally illuminating, if concerning, delve into where’s it all gone wrong from an investment into the team perspective over the past few years, and a look at the ramifications of relegation, with The Athletic’s football finance expert.

Sweet dreams, everyone!

If wet Spam win tomorrow, it's done. We'd need win all of the last 4 games then, because wet Spam will win all of their remaining fixtures except Arsenal. Especially if Saudi Sportswashing Machine also win this weekend, all of wet spams opponents will be on holiday, except Arse.

Leeds look pretty good right now, pumping a poor Burnley side 3-0 with 60 mins played.
They shoot up to 14th above Newcash with 43 points = safe = maybe they won't try whatsoever against us, right?

I think pretty much all the teams in the Premier League will be very motivated to send us down, unfortunately. A bit like how they were bending over for Leicester that season.

I know we’re meant to have hope, I just don’t see us reaching 40 points.

I can see West Ham winning at least two games, I think we might win one, equally I could see us either drawing all of them or maybe sneaking one win.

I’m surprised by how many people on here and elsewhere have us down to beat Leeds, I think our best chances of points could be something at a distracted Villa, and then Everton not having a whole lot to play for on the final day.

Still think you are right?

I wonder whether RDZ will be saying similar at the end of this season

For the first time in ages I’m seeing a glimmer of hope.

Even if I give West Ham a generous 4 points (beat Leeds and draw with Saudi Sportswashing Machine), they get to 40 which means we need 2 wins (eg Leeds and Everton - with additional outside chances at Villa and Chelsea).

If I was being harsher on Wham and gave them just the 3 points from their Leeds game (lose against Arsenal and Saudi Sportswashing Machine), that would mean we need 5 points, so one win and two draws would do.

If I was being even harsher on Wham, they could only get 1 more point (eg Leeds at home) which means we only need one win or three draws in 4 games.

There’s also a parallel world where they beat Arsenal!! Ffs!!

Anyway - I think if we win today we’re very close to being ok….and even if we draw it could be invaluable. And If we lose….all is not lost.

COYS!

Absolutely this.

If… IF … we could somehow win today, I think we’d likely only need one more win to stay up. As you say, I can’t see West Ham getting more than 4 more points in their games left, so a win today would be a HUGE step towards safety.

Let’s hope the players have the confidence to be brave and take the game to Villa.

COYS!!!

The important bit of the mentality now though is to go into each game as we did tonight. There’s three games and only one point in it. Things can easily change, Spammers could nab a point at Woolwich, could beat Saudi Sportswashing Machine… but we’re ahead, we just need to match or better them and have every chance to do it if we play like we did tonight.

I reckon De Zerbi can get that mentality right.

Two points, really. There is absolutely no scenario in which our goal difference drops below Spam.

Very true. I just think beat Leeds and hopefully Woolwich and Saudi Sportswashing Machine beat West Ham and there’s no need for panic on the final day. Would be ideal to wrap it up as early as possible if we can get there.
