Brennan Johnson

Just catching up on the internationals and noticed he was on the Bench for Wales in a must win game

Surely he will want to move on to kick start his career.

He's going to be back up here, which is going to have a knock on for Wales

I’d argue he is higher on the finishing
He has other things that are poor
The goal he scored in the CL was a sublime finish that most players wouldn’t make

Take him for what he is and I think he is fine
There are many wingers who create some chances but don’t get many goals and people crow about them

But that's my point in this

He's not a striker. Strikers metrics are their finishing. If he wants to be judged on his goals alone he's playing in the wrong position. For club (and country now) it's the other things his day job entails that are causing him to be on the bench.

I agree
Wide forwards or wingers get judged ok combined numbers
A wide player with 20 Goals and assist would be deemed to be top drawer
Issue is…. If your feeding a brick CF your numbers will suffer (like at West Ham when they have no striker)
Or if your salah and you actually play wide but as a focal point (and your world class) you can get crazy numbers
What I do know is every player I’ve ever met has said that scoring goals is the hardest thing to do

I noticed Glennan Bonson didn't play for Wales yesterday, against Liechtenstein

2 jokers called Harris and Broadhead played instead, from Wrexham and Oxford.

Bonson came on as a last sub, on 83

Why is that, is he injured or not rated even by Wales?

Liechtenstein are of course a really really poor team, but Wales scraped past them 1-0?

Isn't it obvious? 🤣

Even strikers aren't judged only on their finishing and goals.

If you're scoring half a goal a game or more with some consistency that will make a decent argument for starting games regularly. Goals are hard to come by. That's regardless of position, but will typically be one of the attacking positions obviously.

But that's just one (or two) data points amongst a lot of data points for evaluating an attacking player. Striker or winger or 10 for that matter.

A big aspect of those other things is also the balance of the team. The situations he thrives in we're not very good at setting up. And his shortcomings are shortcomings he shares with several other players in the squad.

If we had a team that was elsewhere really good at ball progression, ball retention in the final third and chance creation I could definitely see him scoring quite a lot, and assisting quite a lot. But we don't, so he doesn't, so he has to offer more.
