Be a move to not lose face.

If there is a release clause and it's met, nothing to be done. It's poor player management on their part. Apparently it was meant to be a secret that he had one.

How can it be off if release clause is triggered and player wants to join? You can bet City or someone will come back in now. Surely what Forest wants at this point.
 
So yeha it looks like they are tinkled because the release clause has been made public, hence us and City coming in. The inference being that the player and his team have been talking to clubs behinds Forests back and leaked the clause.

Thing is, it's common practice now talk to players before agreeing with the club so Forest are just delaying the invevitable.

This will undoubtedly go on for a while.
 
Why would a release clause be a secret? The whole point of a release clause is you tell the club wanting to sign the player that's what you will have to pay for him. Otherwise you are just bidding for a player until it randomly hits a release clause number.

Just sounds like petty nonsense that will be resolved soon enough....
