Jan Vertonghen

From the little we've seen, Toby and Wimmer look a pretty good pairing. I think this would be more of a problem if we had to pair Vert and Wimmer -- perhaps why, when resting Toby recently, Poch paired Dier and Wimmer together.

IMO, we should buy a centre-half who could be Toby's understudy as Wimmer is to Vert. I don't really want us to have to move Dier back from midfield in the event Toby gets injured.
Bartra? Smoke, fire, Puyol, pinch of salt .

Revealed: Tottenham reeling as key defender set to be sidelined for three months

Tottenham expect Jan Vertonghen to be sidelined for at least 12 weeks with knee ligament damage, Football Insider sources understand.

Spurs announced on Tuesday morning the results of tests carried out on the defender’s knee after he was assessed by specialists at a Barcelona hospital on Monday.

As revealed by Football Insider on Monday night, the Belgium international has sprained the medial collateral ligament in his knee.

Tottenham have not revealed how long they expect the defender to be sidelined but a club source has said medics expect Vertonghen to be out for around three months.

The worst-case scenario is that the centre-back will not be able to return for four months, ruling him out of playing again for Mauricio Pochettino’s title challengers this season.

In a club statement on Twitter on Tuesday morning, Tottenham said: “Further assessment and scans have confirmed that Jan Vertonghen sustained damage to his medial collateral ligament in his knee at Palace.

“Our medical staff will continue to monitor his progress during his rehabilitation to determine when he will be ready to return to training.”

The defender limped off 74 minutes into the team’s 3-1 win at Crystal Palace on Saturday. He injured a knee when he fell awkwardly after seemingly being elbowed by Palace striker Connor Wickham

Vertonghen’s lengthy absence is a shattering blow for Spurs as they attempt to maintain their Premier League title challenge.

The 28-year-old’s partnership with countryman Toby Alderweireld has been the bedrock of Pochettino’s team this season, with the pair playing every minute of the team’s Premier League campaign until Vertonghen was substituted at Selhurst Park.

Vertonghen, who was on crutches on Monday night, is currently with the Tottenham squad in Barcelona, where they have a mid-season training camp ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round clash against Colchester.

The obvious replacement for the Belgian centre-back is Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer, who performed well as Tottenham kept a clean sheet against Leicester in the 2-0 FA Cup third round replay last week.

It's naive to expect him to come in and perform at the same level, it's a massive loss for us and much as I hope we can cope I think it makes it difficult for us.

The times Wimmer has played this year he has performed at the same level. Small sample granted but it's what we have to go on.

As i said above Jan has not been asked to do too much this year above standard defending and Wimmer looks a good fit for this remit.

Jan/Toby obviously have a long history as teamates that could have a positive affect for organisation/understanding and hence a solid defence. Alternatively it could be having Dier/Dembele in front of you and lets be honest Hugo loves a save or two.

If Pochettino has no faith in using Fazio for Cup/EL matches then I agree we should invest in Jan. CCV could feature but not sure if he is ready for regular Cup appearances

If true, we desperately need another CB this Jan. Poch has obviously lost faith in Fazio and we should sell him and bring in another.

We'll be fine with Wimmer, but Jan's injury means little to no rotation for our CBs. That's the main problem, imo.

We've not been that lucky with injuries! Although our stats are screwed a bit with Pritchard being injured all season, but I think it's an interesting table all the same.
Fwiw, here's the equivalent table from http://injuryleague.com/injury-league/

You can't buy someone everytime you have an injury. Especially a relatively minor one like this. With wages each new player is usually a c.£20m investment. It's what squads are for.

Not if we are carrying a squad member (Fazio) the manager seemingly won't use. Therefore, it really is as simple as Fazio out and a new CB in.

Fairly big difference there between the reports! You'd think they'd be taking data from similar sources?

The amount of complete and utter rubbish that the BBC write on their sportsday updates I don't hold out much hope that they are correct, they are soo inaccurate it's almost like they are playing a joke on the readers half the time!

Probably depend whether they are counting Pritchard as a senior player or not.

That's what Bentaleb, Veljkovic and 2CV are for. Or recall Dominic Ball from Rangers.

Buying a new Rocha or Nelsen will just block 2CV's development and tie-up wages.

Fazio is (or should be) oven ready. None of the others you mentioned are PL standard CBs at the moment. We need adequate cover now. If Fazio is not it, then we need another CB now. Fazios wages out, means no net increase in wages so that point is moot.

Bentaleb? As a CB?

What? He isn't even good as a pure DM (just watch how shaky we are when he takes over that role).

Also, CCV just turned 18 less than a month ago, and has even less experience than Alli when we threw Dele in (next to none, in fact). And Veljkovic has signalled his intent to leave when his contract ends in July.

Those are all terrible, terrible options, even if you confess to following some strange 'f*ck the promise of the present, build into a title challenge in 2018' philosophy.
