We seem to be leaving a lot of space out on our right. So much space for them to find a runner. Tripier being pulled into the middle.

Yes. It is basic probability.

In the league we have consistently finished in the top six and frequently fifth. In many seasons we only need one of the established top four to have a bad season to finish in the top four.

The reason why it is harder to win a cup is because football in a low scoring game, with a high number of goals scored as a result of individual mistakes. In a knock out competition that means that an individual mistake can cost you your place in the competition. That is why cups are exciting, why giant killings are reasonably common, and why few managers who are in with a chance of qualifying for the Champions League would gamble on winning a cup.
