Official - Defoe

i think the first 20 mins of the 2nd half the game became very stretched and open, and having just got back to 2-2 it seemed sensible to try and get more control of the MF (parker - modric - livermore) and exploit City using the pace and width we are so good at hurting teams with, especially as the game goes on and teams get more tired.

and we were 2 inches away from that working too

I didn't say I was disappointed to see VDV be taken off, just that I don't see Livermore as being the inspirational spark to have taken us on. He's ordinary IMV.

anyhoo - this is a discussion about Defoe, not another "is Livermore any good" thread.

Defoe did alright last night but it is shocking we did not have an attacking option to bring on for him when he tired. It says to me defoe after yesterday is an important member of our aquad but the fact that pav could not even get on the pitch shows he is a waste of a squad place.

For me, I give Defoe a round of applause. He and we all know he is not a striker to play up front alone. But I thought he worked his absolute socks off yesterday. He does what he does best and got on the end of a defensive mistake and to then round Hart and finish was just brilliant from him. I thought he gave Lescott and Savic a torrid time when he actually had the ball, it's just the shame whenever he was near the goal it was just HIM near the goal, no one else in sight.

bang on the money...

Mostly agree, although there was that chance in the 78th minute when Defoe got beyond Lescott and if he'd looked up he would've seen Bale charging into the penalty area. Aside from that though he was given little help and did a great job all things considered.

A real shame that we had no decent attacking options on the bench to exploit City' tiring defenders when we were on top as that Savic looked very beatable.

Defoe has been exceptionally effective for us so far this season...

...with either a goal or an assist on average for every 77 minutes he's been on the pitch for.

Pretty sure Lennon has more than 4 assists though..

1. Emirates Marketing Project - Set up Bale.
2. Fulham - Set up Bale.
3. QPR - Set up Bale.
4. QPR - Set up Bale.

Nope you're right he does have 4.. Parker has 2 though, Saudi Sportswashing Machine (setting up Defoe) and Wolves (setting up Adebayor)

I love the fact that you change your mind in the same post! :)

With 12 goals in 24 matches this season methinks he actually deserves a run in the team and I would suggest we pair him with Ade up front. He has proved to be our most consistent goal scorer this season. Does anybody agree with me?

He missed the second because he timed his run too late and couldn't catch up with Bale's play. But I agree he should be getting more time on the pitch.

JD is having a very good season for us, and imo worked his ass off in what was always going to be a tough ask against City.

His problem however is not how many goals he scores, or how hard he works, it's how well he fits our style of play and who would he replace.

VDV/Ade are more critical to our style of play, and unfortunately for JD, even if Ade leaves at the end of season, we are more likely to replace Ade with another "target" type striker vs. make JD #1. JD will continue to be the striker off bench and starter for domestic cups.

Question for him is, would he rather be 2nd choice at a top 4/challenging team in Spurs, or a regular in a mid table team?

There you go..You hit the nail...I won't call names or put any description on him. Simply put..He does not fit Tottenham Hotspur..He can go and play for West Ham..Portsmouth, Fulham...any mid-table mediocre team. But for a team challenging for titles and CL even as back up he has nothing to offer..
I am sorry no matter how he plays..defenses easily contain him..and that is why he disappears for most of matches..a small player like him does not have an impact unless he has the physical toughness to cause defenders problems. Look at Tevez for instance..he is small..but he is like wild badger..quick, tenacious, aggressive (when he is really playing)..Defoe is a nice sweet guy who does not live up to the big stage..mentally weak, physically weak, limited talent, awareness-wise weak...
That last minute chip in..if it was Ade or Pav that's a winner..Watch the match again like I added..Lennon, Bale, Walker, BAE all of them went for the low crosses
but Defoe every time failed to position him self to meet those crosses...
Sorry..I am counting the days for him to be OUTTA HERE..not even a sub...
Same for Pav even though in my account he is better but still not a CL level team

Don't quite get the hatred for defoe in this thread, he has been out most potent goalscorer this season, he might not be perfect for link up play, but he offers other things.

I for one would like to see him start a few games alongside ade, vdv has not really been offering us anything for the last couple of games and defoe looks pretty sharp to me.

I guess this is what is expected in a knee-jerk thread though.

JD should not replace VDV, but instead replace Adebayor

Absolutely not IMO. Defoe and Adebayor is much better than Defoe and VDV, and Adebayor has been much more important to our all round play than VDV this season.

in reference to you and wookieD about defoe's part in the missed opportunity

i'm not quite sure i agree with this. no one is hungrier for goals in our team than JD. infact you could say that the guy is down right greedy for it.

i actually think defoe might have been well aware of where he was and probably thought that was the best place to be to get the ball in the wide range of passes that could have come from bale. he couldnt have known where bale was going to put that....bale could have hit that ball behind defoe had he run to far forward, but then defoe was in a position that if bale had hit the ball s shade slower then defoe scores, half a metre away from the keeper and defoe scores. instead defoe gets a touch on a ball that was well crossed but also quite close to the keeper...and JUST misses out on scoring for us

i dont think you can really blame anyone for that miss, least of all the one player in our team that would sell his own mother to get a winning goal against the top team in the country.
