Mauricio Pochettino - Sacked

If a runner from the same half runs into the space and onto the ball do you not think that the guy who is supposed to be watching him should run with him.

I played M/F most of my life and part of my job was to keep a eye on my opponent not let him run pass me.

Mate, we are just going in circles

- yes, you are supposed to run with that player, but you will have zero cover from your teammates, and have to hope you are as quick as said runner.

My point, the system is inherently risky, very little opportunity to get support, so back to my post about 3 pages ago, you end up with too many 1:1 situations

Yes but the system needn't be risky. Mourinho won the league with it and also had the best defensive record.

Your right we are, but as I said then there are always going to be situations when players are faced with 1 on 1, but it happens far too often to us and most of that is because of players switching off.

Ahh .. that's the point .. we can't afford the quality of player Cheat$ki can .. and even Mourinho felt he had to dispense with a player of the quality of Mata to make it work (something we would never have the luxury of doing)

The idea that there is this mythical creative player who can get us top 4, but also put in a shift and be great defensively is a mistake (those players if/when they do exist play for top 2 clubs) .. we can't afford those players, therefore we need a system that allows us to get the best out of the Chadli's/Eriksen's of the world, not one that somehow makes them into a workhorse and expecting them to still be effective.

I can agree with that, I have been saying since earlier last season that our CM players ( Bentaleb and Mason) need to work harder and do more defensive work. The reason we are so wide open is not because of Chadli and Eriksen because they have strengths in other areas, our problem is that the two in CM do not do the defensive work that is needed to allow the likes of Eriksen the freedom to play to their strengths.

Have the teams that have enjoyed success with Bielsa's approach been big spenders?

So is it the system or the players? ;)

Having a system does not mean everything is rigid.

This is what Poch said in his pre-match presser: "my system is always one where the players can change, move and we are flexible."

Like it mate ...

Look we are in it now .. I just worry if we got a chance at this years version of a VDV, would we say he doesn't fit the system? or would we make it work?

I have no idea, but I would hope that we would make it work. What we are crying out for is a bit of flair and ingenuity. I do agree that pace is something that we need. The interlinking of our front 3 has been hit or miss. Hit for the first half against Stoke and miss for large parts of the rest of the games. I just don't get how the same group of players can get it so right only to lose it, but that is the wonder of football I suppose.

Sorry but I disagree massively

Of the goals we have conceded This season so far the United one was clearly a midfielders mistake

Both Stoke a goals came from the midfield being over run buy because we had no forwards on the pitch and the wide players did feck all defending

Yesterday was about Chadli being pedestrian and Davies being outnumbered, plus verts reluctance to go to the man with the ball which is tinkle poor yet loads of centre backs do it

None of the goals other than United IMO were because of the central midfielders

I'm all for improvements but we have to have a threat from the creative players but they need to do some defensive work too

People argue about Chelsea's success with the system but it's because the three behind Costa work so hard defensively they can carry Fabregas as Matic does the donkey work supported by Willian and Ramires for example

Plus their defenders don't really attack

It's not necessarily a pacy player, but simply moving the ball forward quickly when we win possession. Sometimes we do it, so you have to wonder what the magic ingredient is.

Pochettino did very little in Spanish football.

He was very lucky to get the Southampton job where he was even more lucky to inherit a very strong squad of players, a lot of whom have now gone for big money to other clubs.

Last season we were poor in so many games that I am amazed we got 5th. Chelscum, the Scum home and away were good but not much else. We were lucky to beat Hull away, Leicester home and away, Swansea away and probably others... How many games did we win by two goals or more? Chelscum and Hull (undeserved) at home.

Our performances indicate no pattern of play other than slow! Too many players fail to even get 6 out of 10 each week and there is no leader on the pitch who has a go if someone doesn't do what they should do.

Poch's comment about taking a striker off against Stoke shouldn't mean you concede two goals makes me seriously doubt his ability.....So if my missus had gone up front that wouldn't change things. That move said to Stoke come and attack us. We can't defend with any assurity and were lucky to get a point.

I despair!

You're right. You can negate the need from pace with quick incisive passing with movement, but that movement seems to only have taken place in that first half against Stoke. This is where I can only imagine how frustrated managers must get. It would be like here but times 1000 as their job is on the line! Imagine that. Your reputation is in the hands of multi-million pound earning footballers.

I don't agree with this. We play ball players in central midfield to get the ball forward quickly. We do lack pace in our front four and we could do with one who was a bit more direct but we have been trying to address this.

I'm sorry but luck does not get you to fifth. Poch has been a success. There is room for improvement, but in my mind that is not replacing the manager and starting afresh. Only in the most extreme of circumstances would I think getting rid of Poch I don't know how to use the like button and we are not there.

Hold on... He did inherit a very solid squad that should have findings fifth based on recent seasons

It wasn't like he lost any decent players

But he did so plenty of thins others wouldn't have done IMO like play the youngsters and for me he should get the credit for that as a minimum

We have to stick with him
