Fabrice Muamba

I thought I read it was 2 hours to get his heart beating (on its own again).

Presumably as the paramedics reached him quickly, got the defibrilators on him and the CPR going all relatively quickly it should mean that his blood was being pumped, they will have been 'feeding' him high conc oxygen to compensate for any reduction in blood pumping quality and so his brain shouldn't have been starved of oxygen for too long and therefore the brain damage hopefully would have been limited.

awww I was thinking this, really hope he pulls through, get well soon Muamba.

does a cardiac heart screening always detect a problem? I always assumed all Premier League clubs gave their players heart scans, maybe the FA should make it mandatory from now on.

No, cardiac screening can pick up a lot but there are just some issues that seem to pass under the radar.

Think I read it was as good as mandatory now anyway. The FA has it for all England players from 15 years upwards I think so Muamba would have had multiple cardiac screenings in the last 5 years or so when on U-21 duty and before as well as probably with Arsenal, Birmingham and Bolton as I think most league clubs do it as part of their regular medicals.

Just unfortunate that it never got picked up with Muamba but just incredibly fortunate in some ways that it happened in the one sort of place outside a hospital where he could get such immediate quality treatment.

still worrying to know that it can't be picked up 100%

the Cardiologist that was sent to the lane, should give the players reassurance. But if there is things that cannot be picked up under the radar, can be difficult for any professional athlete to be worry free.

I really hope he makes it through.
I worry about swelling around his brain. I lost a friend two years ago yesterday to similar incident. She didnÔÇÖt feel well and asked her daughter to go across the street to get help ÔÇô a cardiologist of all people was her neighbor. When they return in she was on the floor not breathing. They worked on her for 20 minutes got her to the hospital. In the end the swelling on her brain increased each day and the lack of activity never improved. They took her off support 5 days after her collapse.

So sad, she was the fittist person I knew. Played on 4 teams at the age of 40 and was the freshes player on the pitch at game's end.

Pull through Fab.

I really hope Fab pulls through from this, thoughts are with him, and all those associated.

On a related note, I thought Spurs fans would be interested on a little update I received on Radwan Hamed. I noticed David Hutton, another of our ex-Spurs, refer to a similar incident when he was 16, so I asked if he was talking about Radwan. David was kind enough to confirm that it was Radwan he was referring to and that he "isn't fully recovered, but he's slowly worked his way back to walking and talking since the incident".

So, I have everything crossed that Fabrice Muamba, the man rather than the footballer, can recover at least as well as this, and then carry on down that road to a full recovery, making gains every day.

Latest reports are that he has improved slightly, his heart is beating without medication and there are reportedly signs of movement in his arms and legs! Come on Fabrice, keep going!

another sportsman who nearly lost his life at WHL was Michael Watson. He is still alive to this day, has fought back remarkably.

its shocking reading back about what happened that night, not just the injuries sustained but the lack of medical care at the ground. Shocking

Rematch with Eubank and injury

A rematch was arranged on 21 September 1991 at White Hart Lane, this time for the vacant WBO super middleweight title. In round 11, with Watson ahead on points and seemingly on the verge of a stoppage victory, he knocked Eubank down with a right hook. Moments later, Eubank was back on his feet and connected with a devastating uppercut, which caused Watson to fall back and hit the back of his head against the ropes. Referee Roy Francis stopped the fight in round 12, after which Watson collapsed in the ring. There was no ambulance or paramedic at the event.[1] Doctors wearing dinner jackets arrived after some eight minutes, during which time the fallen fighter received no oxygen. A total of 28 minutes elapsed before Watson received treatment in a hospital neurosurgical unit.[4][5] He spent 40 days in a coma and had six brain operations to remove a blood clot.[6]

After regaining consciousness, he spent over a year in intensive care and rehabilitation and six more years in a wheelchair[1] while he slowly recovered some movement and regained the ability to speak and write. Peter Hamlyn, the consultant neurosurgeon who operated on Watson, said in 2010 "I think back to those first days, and the milestone moments. The first eight months were so depressing. He couldn't hear, couldn't speak, couldn't walk. Slowly, he clawed it all back. So extraordinary.

hopefully Fab makes it back

A close friend of his said he's spoken a minimal amount to him, in both English and French. Great news and encouraging signs.

It seems all news that has come out today has been good so far. Let's hope he'll be able to play again
