Repetitive bickering and point scoring about money and our transfer policy

Re: **Official Other Games Thread, Season 2012/13**

In the post i quoted unless i missunderstood the 'i thought we 'got' our Wenger quote'

What's happened to you man? you used to be cool :(

Cool as in 'pro-AVB'?

Couldn't possibly describe how delighted I am for having him as (hopefully) our long term manager. He's the antithesis of our previous man in so many aspects (both managerial and humanitarian). But he hasn't been faultless and I think it's fair to point that out on occasion - fair and objectivity for everyone, right. And if we finish 5th in 2 weeks time - I'd expect when our season 'analysis' is done of where we went wrong - some responsibility to be apportioned to him. Do you think that is fair, Billy?

Re: what has happened to the transfer section?

regarding Jan, i think its possible that it was AVB and not Levy who rejected the idea of someone like Remy joining. You have to remember that Levy was negotiating for Remy back when Redknapp was manager and the player was in the 15-20 mill bracket. So the Jan 2013 knockdown fee of 7-8 mill would have represented a no brainer for wheeler dealer Danny boy. However i get the feeling AVB isnt a fan of Remy and was holding out and will hold out for Damiao.

Re: **Official Other Games Thread, Season 2012/13**

Work ethic? Dear oh Dear, Lennon is one burst of pace going forward and one defending. Nothing. Not the level required.

I have been to most games this season and I havent seen him do anything spectacular going forward. To say the least.

Siggy is an average player. Can get a good shot on target but thats about it.

Sturridge hasnt got more ability than Lennon? Come on! Please!

Once again, I'm delighted that you aren't in charge of player recruitment at Spurs.

Re: **Official Other Games Thread, Season 2012/13**

Ok, can I ask what the people who are against Levy think are the reasons for him performing his role the way he has done?

Is it that he is incompetent - that he doesn't realise that spending the money that is clearly there to spend will see us finish in a better position?

Is it that he doesn't want us to be successful, and is therefore deliberately not spending the money that is clearly there to spend because he would rather keep us in the position we are in?

Or some other reason that I can't think of right now?

Because the way I see it, he has managed us to the point where we are over-performing based on our wages and turnover. We are now competing with Arsenal and Chelsea. To expect to finish above them and see nothing else as failure is just unrealistic, flat out. I want to be competing with them and put up a real fight to get above them, but with how competitive this league is you can't just expect it.

Even if we signed Damiao and Moutinho at the start of the year, we still wouldn't definitely finish above them. And if we can't get them for the right deal for us, with the right payment structure and satisfying all parties, then we can't do it. Someone put a good example a few pages back about why we would have to pay in instalments and it just got dismissed, despite it being very likely that it is the reason why we can't just go out and spend the money how we would like to. If we are going to sign those next level players, because of our turnover, stadium size and wage structure we will have to try and get them on terms that are overly favourable to us or we won't be able to get them at all. And even if we did sign them, there's still every chance that we don't finish top 4 because Arsenal and Chelsea can still spend more. So what then?

I think personally the way it has been calculated that if we can get the players we need to take us up a level in the right structure for us, we will do it. But we will not mortgage the future of the club on those players and will wait to get the best value, and in the meantime pick up the players who will likely improve such as the Sigs and Holtbys. That way, with good management we can hopefully maintain our position which as it is, is overachieving already and hope to make a push to get even further ahead. If we spend a brick load of money we couldn't really afford, set ourselves back on the new stadium and still didn't qualify for the CL I would be fudging furious.

As it is, the way we are doing it allows us to stay ahead of the likes of Everton but maintaining financial stability and retaining our spending power so that we can finance a stadium and so that if a quality player does come along, we can go for it if the terms are favourable to us. If we were to spend money we didn't really have, there's every chance we still finish 5th only now we've lost that money, lost our footing as a club and have gambled where we didn't really need to.

But I have to ask again, why do people think Levy is doing it the way he is? Incompetence? A lack of understanding? A lack of wanting to do the best for us? It's not ultimate proof that he is doing a good job, but if you check the recent Benny interview, that is a player that seems to want to understand the business side of the club and he has maximum respect for Levy and how he runs his business. The chairman seems to have good relationships with our players, and they must be respectful of how he is running the club. There certainly doesn't seem to be any suggestion that he is holding us back from making progress due to glaring errors that everyone else can see, and instead he seems to be acknowledged as the man that has got us to this point.

Re: **Official Other Games Thread, Season 2012/13**

The Chelsea squad that Ancelotti inherited was a ready made title winning team. What Ancelotti achieved in his first season was only marginally above par.

If Spurs finish 5th, AVB's achievement will be on par.

How exactly was it a winning team when they hadn't won the PL for 3-4 seasons and were shambles with interim managers, etc.?

Marginally above par for a manager's debut season in the PL who had NEVER managed there or could even speak English. Give it a break, jimmy

If Spurs finish 5th that would be a true representation of the tools he's been given. Anything more would indicate a great achievement as more than the sum of our parts

Very few people here are 'against Levy' as far as I can tell - we are simply discussing some of his approach methods towards certain aspects and most importantly - our transfer dealings

Re: what has happened to the transfer section?

Did you believe we could spend 100m in 08/09?

but back then we had the Berba money, the Keane money, our wage bill was lower, we werent investing in building projects, so more cash was freely available.

since that season, it seems to have been a sell to buy policy. A definite decision. Plus a rise in overall wages, the new training ground, the new stadium have all put a squeeze on what we have to spend

Do you think we are stronger or weaker than last year? Do you think that considering Chelsea can spend 30M on Hazard, 20+ on Oscar, Moses and the wages they can offer guys like Ba, that we should be ahead of them? Or Arsenal, despite losing RVP actually still having a decent squad that's been drilled in their way of working because of 15 years of planning?

If we had last year's squad vs this year's Arsenal, I'd say we should be ahead of them. Before the season I expected Chelsea to be a lot closer to City, but just because they've under-performed it still doesn't mean we should be right there with them.

Personally I think there was a very real chance this year that we could have been duking it out with Everton and Liverpool for a Europa League place, and the fact that we are comfortably above them means that we have slightly overachieved IMO. Not massively over-achieved, but slightly.

Ok rephrase it to how you said it then - why is he taking that approach?

Of course it's fair, although personally speaking 5th place and close to the CL places points wise is a good return from the manager this season, in my view and if anyone thinks im talking crap there they are free to check out any of the predtction type threads from the summer where i said exactly that.

And no, not cool as in Pro AVB - you seem to be on the hunt for confrontation since you've returned, hopefully that's not the case though

Re: **Official Other Games Thread, Season 2012/13**

I thought we got 'our' Wenger this season?

Or was that Arry The Innocent?

Or Ramos

Oh, wait . . .

Easy, tiger.............shaney was trying to make the point that Arsenal always achieved top four despite losing key players. And, in that context, it's surely pertinent that there is one constant throughout that period.

I made no mention of AVB or Spurs.

Compared to last year - the only weaker spot is CM, imv

- same strike force plus Dempsey > Saha (lol) - you could argue that is stronger!
- better keeper by a country mile
- King was poor last year already - so we have a better defence all-round - Caulker is back, etc.
- Bale has improved as a player
- Sandro has improved

I think we are a little bit weaker - but my point was around achieving objectives in your first season, nothing to do with Chelsea's budget. Simply used Ancelotti as examples. A good manager would have us perform better than the sum of our parts - much like Wenger has in the past 5-6 odd transition years. If AVB finished 4th in 2 weeks - he would have achieved the same. If not - he has done the minimum expected, imv

i like him more now personally, dude looks at both sides and his posts leave me with little wiggle room to argue against him these days

i think my mood on here is somehow directly linked with how i get on with him

weird.

i even see KD agreeing with him...

Re: **Official Other Games Thread, Season 2012/13**

Unfortunately, until we get a striker who performs 7 weeks out of 10 and contributes with goals and assists them we are never going to achieve top 4. I personally think ABV has done a fantastic job in his first season considering how weak we are up front and our lack of back ups for the wingers.

Re: **Official Other Games Thread, Season 2012/13**

No such thing - I'm just sick and tired of not being able to call someone out on a discussion board (!) and engage in a debate over their opinion (which they should be prepared to have challenged at any point by having chosen to post on an online forum) without being labelled confrontational. If we all agreed on everything - might as well have one massive 'Official Stuff Thread' and circle jerk over AVB's pics.

Personally I think 5th for him and that squad is the absolute minimum - i.e. he's done well - anything more - he's done exceptionally well

Wages and transfer budgets go hand in hand - we're spending more money on wages than we ever have meaning the transfer budget gets reduced.

And Levy/Spurs have always been about the 'project' - buying young players to 'grow' in to the team and to a level we can't usually attain - the DoF set ups that were there purposely to build for the future etc
