Jan Vertonghen

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

Let's not forget we are strong at CB, and whilst BAE has always been good going forward he is a liability nonetheless and Verts is as good going forward as BAE if not more effective and is easily a better defender. When Kaboul is fit could he and Caulker be CBs with Verts LB?

Verts has a much better scoring record... He could be equal with Benny already on his Spurs return after just a few games in fact. He really has brought a lot to this squad already.

Vertonghen oh oh
Vertonghen oohoh oohoh
He flew from Amsterdam
To play for the Tottingham

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

I remember reading some quotes where Verts mentioned he preferred a central role. I don't think he'd take too well to playing as a LB for the rest of the season, despite the fact that he looked damn good there.

Yeah but he's never had the pleasure of playing LB with the formidable Bale ahead of him has he :)

Plus he seems to be the type of character to play wherever asked and not complain.

Future Spurs captain for sure......

In the 2nd half against QPR, there was loads of space for him to push up. He's excellent moving the ball forward and he'd be given more license to do so as a LB. He also put some great balls into the box.

Hmmm... Cultured, plays with both feet, happy to play CB or LB. I knew an Italian like that...

He really is pure class. He is an absolute snip....

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

Anyone who knows the back ground of his move to us knows one of the reasons is because he would get to play in his favoured position of Centre Half! He can fill in other positions.

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

I'd forgot he can also play holding midfield as well. When we see Kaboul fit again there's plenty of options and versatility in case Sandro and Parker get injured

Am really happy with how the squad has turned out in terms of FB's, CB's and DM's. The two kyles signing for a total of 8m will prove to be a very sound investment for the club this season and hopefully for many years. Benny was got in for what, about 2/3m? Another Bargain. Dawson was around 4m perhaps? Kaboul was about the same. Then with Verts at 9m or so, Gallas brought in on a free and Caulker as living and breathing proof that we actually have an academy I think we've done well in putting our back line together and there's a positive looking future for that backline.

Our entire backline was probably around the same price as Rio Ferdinand was many years ago, perhaps even cheaper...

Try our entire defensive squad!
2002 Rio moves to ManU for £30m...

King Ledley - Home Grown
Stephen Carr - Home Grown
Dean Richards - £8m
Ben Thatcher - £5m
Chris Perry - £4m
Mauricio Taricco - £2m
Goran Bunjevcavic - £1.4m
Ginger Pele - £1m
Anthony Gardner - £1m

You can argue about valuations on King and Carr bringing that up as King was fully up and running by 2002 and Carr was in his pomp and still had a few years on his contract. But still, yeah, bit of a difference!

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

Just imagine a Thatcher - Hutton pairing at FB. We'd rid the league of decent wingers in no time.

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

Odds on Ferguson praising Vertonghen in the media towards the end of the season, just before the transfer window opens? Or Hazard. Or Kompany.

Re: Jan Vertonghen official

Lol I thought you was referring to a former Spurs player, although still said in jest! Maldini is a good shout actually, he just oozes class.....

I wish! Maldini has got to be the all time greatest defender, I don't care about Italy's failures, the bloke was just something else.
