Funny that Healey resigns because Starmer wouldn't come up with a plan for the 3% defense spending and now he refuses to commit to it until the spending plan next year.

almost like he wasn’t as concerned about defence as he claimed

I wonder what else it could have been about…

Thus will cost him, and more importantly the government, a lot of respect in the MoD, at a very important time.

They need to bundle defence and green energy budgets together. In fact they should merge those two departments. 100% domestically owned green energy is the quickest way to achieve security in the world. Then despots like Putin and Trump become irrelevant.

Food security is another huge national security problem.

The food security one involves external supply chains, which are pinch points outside the boundaries of the UK. Disruption there will have an immediate impact within days and a potentially catastrophic impact within a week ( 9 meals from anarchy...). You could argue most of the others are somewhat under the control of the government, or could be in an pinch. I just think that food is the soft underbelly of the UKs national security and needs more attention. I'm sure I read recently there are little to no national stockpiles. At least you have a target though (60% sufficency). We don;t even have that over here.

Yes, I think they were going to release some guidance/advice around being prepared for a crisis... including food (stick up on tinned food etc :)).

I'm sure we could become more self sufficient is we gave it some thought. Part of the potential to do so would come from perfecting the water part of security.
 
I’m about 70% through a book called Attack Warning Red, about UK preparations for a nuclear strike in the Cold War, they put a lot of time and effort, but very little money, into plans and guidance for what we would do if hit by Russian nukes. Ostensibly they were psychological only to give the illusion of a plan, the reality was, anyone not on the list for a bunker was left to fend for themselves.

I doubt we are any better prepared now for the inevitable collapse of order.

Yeah all the "Protect and Survive" propaganda was just to stop people panicking. None of it would have made any difference if the worst had happened.

The Civil Defence Corp was disbanded because similarly people always knew it was a sham and there wouldn't be anything left after a nuclear bomb, so government just stopped funding it.

These islands are perfect for growing food (or were), but sufficiency can be achieved under glass as the Dutch have shown. Reducing animal farming is key though.
