Andy Robertson

Strong links and reports today to suggest we are after Andy Robertson.

Robertson’s Liverpool contract expires in the summer. So think we are going for a cut price back up left back/rotation for Udogie. This also suggests that Souza is not expected to be ready until at least next season.

He would bring good experience, winning experience so a useful option.

Plettenburg has said that an agreement has been reached.

He is 31 so its a strange one for me - though Davies was the last of our players on the wrong side of 30
Maybe counting on his leadership experience as he was vice captain for liverpool before
Regardless he is a still an above average player so it will definitely help the team

The big question mark is whether Robbo has adjusted his games based on his age. If in his head he thinks he can still be up and down all the time then we won't see great performances from him. In that scenario we might see some great moments, and other moments where other players need to cover for him defensively.

He's a leader and fantastic player on his day though.

H’s the sort who will carry on til his 40 at a high level.

No worries. Frank will just tell him not to run past the half way line and stay in position 😉

(that is a joke based on previous conversations about Frank, not to be taken seriously).

Think he would be a good signing. Experience, natural left footed left back. Replacing Davies short term while Souza settles in and develops.

A problem position for us. Sign a young 19 year old with bags of potential who probably needs a bit of time. Sign a 31 year old who can definitely do a job, almost certainly can be relied upon and is a natural fit. While keeping the option of playing Spence there (say him and Porro are fit, Udogie isn't and it's a big game probably he's better than Robertson at this point). But now Porro can sometimes get a rest instead of continually being run into the ground.

Seems like good squad planning to me.

Who was it on here who called this a while back?

Finney on the ball:

I know we'll get criticism from some quarters for a signing like Souza considering our predicament right now but I still think it is the right path to go down. We don't have the funds to sign best, ready made players now and even if we did we don't have the gravitas to attract them to the club.

We need to double down and continue down this road of signing great young players but make sure that we have better pathways for them to fulfill their potential, either via better relationships with other clubs for loans or, better still, getting ourselves a feeder club in a weaker european league.

I think we also need to be smarter with bringing in some experienced players to help the youngsters. Players like Xhaka and Henderson have been invaluable this season for Sunderland and Brentford. I haven't really had much thought who there is that could play that sort of role at Spurs but as we're struggling at left back and seemingly bringing in one for the future I wonder whether Liverpool would be prepared to sell Andy Robertson for a not particularly massive fee?
