We shouldn’t be playing them with Kane either. He looks depressed going for long balls, and stops trying after a while. Basically this squad is not designed for long balls and I hope Mourinho is flexible enough to forego them.

You know, consistently fails to be positionally sound, when in a four takes out one of our own DMs who has to cover thus leaving us light in there and swarmable? Those sorts of points? Another formation. Players starting in attacking combinations they've never players before again.
Every time we got the ball the player had to actually look up and see where their teammates where.
That extra touch slowed down our game and we could create no real passing patterns.
They were able to put in blocks and get players back into position.
Surely as a new manager coming in you decide on a formation and get the players to stick to it while they get used to playing your system.
Poch played the same 4231 for two seasons when he came in.

We haven't really been playing a 4 though.... it's pretty much a 3 with Verts playing as a left sided centre half.
If you think Aurier is doing anything other than what Mourinho is asking him to do with his positioning then I question your sanity.
Mouriho is having the same issue Poch had with the players avaialble being a mixture of not good enough, heads not in the right place and various other things like injuries and suspensions - both were/are looking to juggle things around in the hope of something clicking/making the most of whats there any given week.
funny how we're not seeing the same level of micro analysis of the current managers decisions in team selections as we did with the previous though

I thought he was stodgy and ended up playing three positions in one game. Had Kane been fit we might’ve rested him; he needs one. I did not think he was nearly as terrible as half here, I thought he was put in positions throughout the match which don’t suit him. When he plays off Kane there is natural rhythm. Even with Sonny he has that but Sonny was very rusty today. Add the fact that playing off Moura is tough for anyone and I think he is compromised. He ended up dropping deep to allow LoCelso and Lamela the space today; again not his position. He ks an easy target IMO.
You’ve factored in that he’s played way too much football in the last 2 months? He’s knackered imo and is coming too deep again.

Do you not feel his poor form has been ongoing over an extended period of time? IMO his performances fell off a cliff after the last season at WHL.

2nd half ditching a centre back [effectively] for Lo Celso made a big difference.
Aurier had acres of space to play with and did put in some good crosses, but by GHod he is not a defender, his first thought is never to sprint back and defend, he just watches the other defenders and tries to work out whether he might be required to run back too. We must have a better winger than this guy?

So his poor performance was everybody else's fault but his?
Once he dropped deeper he actually improved IMO as he was a disaster when further forward and Lo Celso and Lamela showed up how bad he was by showing how easy it was to make things happen in the final third by injecting some pace into the attack.

Sad to see the decline of Dier gather pace too. Looked very, very shaky when only faced with sporadic and quite routine attacking forays from Boro. Don't see him as a centre half at all.

So...first off, do you think Mourinho asks him to switch off like he does defensively? Question what you like, I think to suggest as much as ludicrous. Secondly, he has played the three more recently but it has not been his common shape. That has been 4-2-3-1. If you want to go through match by match I’d be happy to. Thirdly, and this is the one place I agree, Aurier is Aurier. He can be great going forward, albeit erratic, and he is not a great defender. So it is on the manager when he plays him. I am personally baffled Mourinho persists with him, it must be for what he hopes he can bring going forwards. Let’s see how he does next weekend; I predict he will cost us at least one goal if not more depending on shape.
