Dele Alli

Alli’s game is all about trying things. When they come off - genius - when not, frustrating, wasteful.

Like trying to play in central midfield?

Good GHod I hope we put him back where he is at his best this season. Poch stated not so long ago he is the most exciting youth talent in world football (or something to that effect), if so, might be great to try to make the most of that..

Last year was a waste of him, not that he’s beyond criticism for some poor decision making though.

I think some of you expect so much of him down to his known quality and what he has demonstrated in his career but forget his age.

He looked very mature and composed last season compared to his previous years, he has levelled his temperament and cut out the diving.

His temperament has matured, but he had a poor season in terms of stepping up his game.

I don't hold it against him for two reasons

- At his age, and the level we play at, there will be adjustment periods
- I believe he and Eriksen suffered from the lack of consistent cover/personnel behind them in midfield and had to sacrifice some part of their game.

For Alli to successfully play a deeper role he'd have to completely change his game. One of the things about him is that he's not the greatest technically player. His touch and passing is sometimes loose and his decision making isn't the best when deeper. However when further up the pitch his ability to play on instinct is second to none, ghosting in the box, trying balls round the corner.

He's too good at what he does well to play him in a role where he performs at non optimum levels. Much like playing Kane as a #10. Yeah he can do it to a degree, but what is the point. Slightly worries me us starting pre-season playing the diamond formation again cause I'm not sure which of our players actually benefit from playing that way.

Dele is class and you are right he is maturing as a person. But he is not a CM thats for sure, he isnt really someone who can spray the ball around and his skillset doesnt suit that position at all. Im sure he was only played there because we were struggling with injuries, hope to see him further up closer to Kane next season....

If his pre season is anything to go by then we are in for another frustrating season from this guy. Been average for more than 1 season, i don't care if he scores a couple of important goals now and again he is no where near consistent and plays like he doesn't care. Could well be a what if player if he does not start doing the easy things.

I think that you are being a bit premature. Pre-season rarely tells you much about how a player will play once the season gets underway.

Dele had a tough season last year. No proper pre-season, injuries and getting moved around. He's a quality player and we should get behind him.

I have been hoping he would come out of this "bad form" for 1 and a half seasons. He is doing the same thing in pre season as he was all of last season. I know he is one of the fans favourites but Eriksen is being criticised and he has contributed alot more than Alli in the last season.

Strange the way the knives come out for Alli quicker than anyone else

Criticism where its due, everyone else plays like they actually care regardless of how poor their performance is. Alli plays like he is in the park with mates and it doesn't matter if his unnecessary flicks work or not.

Other fans have been saying for a while that he is 1 of the most overrated players in the prem and i am starting to believe them. I will hold my hands up at the end of the season if he proves me wrong but i cannot see that happening.

If it was due then you'd have a point but we're talking about a couple of halves of football in preseason.

If he finishes pre-season fit and ready for the next nine months, then job done.

Form fluctuates, even for the very best players. There are several reasons why last season was tough for Dele. He's good enough that I'll back him to come back and improve further.

"Other clubs fans" think he is over-rated because the role he is playing the last year or so doesn't grab the attention on MoTD that his goalscoring second striker role did previously - he's actually dug in and done a job for the team, sacrificing the headline star-of-the-team position for a more mature deeper role and gets called out for being flash and not taking things seriously.

I think that what makes Alli great at times is also what makes him poor at times. He is a kind of anti-Jenas, he can try things because he isn't afraid that it won't come through, whereas Jenas had the technical ability but not the calmness. An Alli on note is perhaps the league's most exciting player, and it's pretty obvious that he grew up watching Ronaldinho more than Scott Parker (where the opposite might be true for Winks - joke). There is a reason behind why Alli was chosen to feature in Fifa 18's admittedly horrible story mode. He can be bang on wasteful and ineffective, and might be a borderline luxury player, but he is the sort of player you don't dare to leave out because he can do some unbelievable stuff.
