Stoke apparently turned down by Flores. Giggs going to Wales (probably a blessing in disguise). O Neill turned them down (probably a blessing in disguise).

Lambert named Stoke manager
Paul Lambert has been named as Stoke City’s manager.

The former Norwich and Villa boss has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Peter Coates said: “Paul greatly impressed us with his knowledge of our squad and had a clear plan of how he would improve our results.

“He’s a man who backed himself as a player, none more so than when he turned down contract offers in Scotland to go on trial in the German Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund, and it’s obvious he adopts the same approach as a manager.”

He bought some big improvements to the way players trained and looked after themselves, but has been in decline for sometime, with the resources available to him he should have done a lot better, but his ego was too big.

Thats why companies and Arsenal are a company remember, have boards who look after the these things.
It's not just a problem with Wenger it goes right to the top.
Wenger is a symptom the board and Gazidis IMHO is the disease.

He'll be there, but then that might be it.

I dont know if he is "great" or not. Itll take me some time to decide.

I think he was well ahead of the times when he came here, and played a big part in modernising/revolutionising British football.

But he completely failed to move with the times once everyone had caught up, and has since stubbornly refused to go with it. Which seems really odd to me, put it this way - were he an old fashioned clogger who refused to look at diet and training etc in a modern light it would make sense.

Instead he was that progressive guy, who then refused to progress.

Absolutely right, that's the modern game many boards happy to make money when fans want to win things, I'm a dinosaur still think it's a game to be enjoyed, winning and money are not my prime concern.
 
What's happening there reminds me a bit of Clough's ending at Forest. Not that Arsenal are going to get relegated, sadly.
 
The other thing with Wenger, is I wonder if he can actually walk away?

I can well see a situation where he is on the board, or as some DoF type, or something like that.

Problem is, as a manager, he is too hands on - wants to do everything himself.

I wouldnt see him as being able to not meddle from a more exec position...

That was the rumour last week with Wenger moving upstairs and Arteta taking over as coach. That sounds like the worst of all worlds to me.
 
First Ive heard that one. Isnt Arteta at City at the minute?

A few of my closest friends are Arsenal fans, so Ive had similar discussions with them. Initially they tried to compare Wenger to SAF, I had to say, they are nothing alike.

SAF was always one step above the team, with a coach in there doing the day to day. This added gravitas to when he made an appearance, and allowed him perspective on the team and where it was heading/what it needed.

Consequently SAF was able to rebuild that side what? 5 times? And each time, while maintaining a Man Utd identity, these teams were often entirely different in shape and style.

SAF actually managed, more than coached.

Wenger, it seems, tries to do it all. Effectively he spreads himself to thin to really get everything done, and he is far to close to the detail to really see the bigger picture. Its a source of enormous frustration for my mates.

For a time they could console themselves with us never being in the same conversation, but thats changed the last few years and just rubs salt into the wounds...
