Just putting it out there, I think part of Mourinho's brief is to have the new Mourinho ready when he finally moves on.

Could be. Though with the unpredictable nature on managers, success and availability of new options when the time comes I don't think it's the highest priority.

I think a more important factor is getting in backroom staff that gets the best out of Mourinho, including adding things to our staff where perhaps he's not at his best.

Legacy projects get suggested a lot, I can’t think of any examples (for the last 20 years) outside of Ajax and Barca, where it’s arguably not been a huge success anyway.

Yep it was a pre-planned investment. Also to mitigate the risk of Mourinho temperament. Was clear when Mourinho and his team was announced that lots of work hard gone into the negotiations to pry the two from Lille.

I do not believe for a second that the coaching team were bought in with a view to replacing Mourinho or that the club had any involvement in who is part of the coaching staff. Mourinho chose his backroom team, and he is not going to pick people who will undermine his position.

    Jol came in as assistant
He took over when Santini binned it off

That wasn't intentional though. Arnesen wanted Jol but Levy had committed to appointing a name.

Was Jol a manager before us? There must of been some incentive to become a number two?

I always got the impression he was always lined up for it, perhaps they sold it to him as Santini for a year or two then he moved upstairs / retired and then Jol would deffo get it. It did feel like Santini was a dead man walking and Jol was Arnesens preferred choice. Maybe Levy thought he wasn’t a big enough name to get in from the off?

He has talked about how important Robson was for him and how he likes to help people improve.

He is now in that Robson type area.

I'm sure that is the case, although he has been a little less complimentary about AVB, but I think that there is a wealth of difference between helping a young coach gain experience and setting out to groom a successor.

That's what I thought. I remember Jol was Arnesen's choice, but Levy wanted Santini. Arnesen must of said something to Jol, to make him feel he'd get a shot at number one when Santini went (and a temporary step down was worth it), and also, didn't Santini go because he thought he was being undermined?

Jol had initially been lined up to become Alex Ferguson's assistant at United. From what I recall it was pretty much a done deal until Carlos Queiroz got sacked by Real Madrid and AF opted to have him return as his no 2 instead. Sliding doors and all that.
