Sissoko dropped him, Rose then got caught in two minds. Rose wouldn't have been needed if Sissoko did his job, Sissoko dropping his man wouldn't have mattered if Rose had been decisive.

I actually do think Sissoko could have done better here. I can’t be definitive, because I don’t know exactly where the breakdown was, and who was supposed to be tracking who, so maybe Sissoko was sticking higher to press an inside pass from Mings, and Winks wasn’t anywhere to be seen in front of the defence as he was forward.

So maybe it was the result of us taking an offensive risk and getting caught, and the team broke down, but I do think Sissoko is usually closer to the danger than he was to McGinn here. With that said, we let the ball bounce, and we still outnumber them 3 vs 2 and Sanchez and Rose both also could have done better.

It feels like there was a breakdown somewhere, or maybe as Finney says some high winds gave that pass the distance it usually wouldn’t have gotten.

    Just can’t agree
Rose was wide left when the ball got played quite centrally over Sanchez
McGinn didn’t break his stride after leaving Sissoko and scored

Sanchez dealt with it poorly. Got caught in two minds and did neither well enough for a player of his ability

Sissoko let his man run from deep and left him (possible he may have been someone else’s man earlier in the move)

The only defender to react was rose who chased in to deal with McGinn and IMO slipped (it was in front of us)

McGinn should take a huge amount of credit but we made a lot of mistakes in that move

I actually think Sanchez did the right thing, occupied his man and stopped him turning him in behind. Someone should have been anticipating the ball over the top behind him.
It's rose or Sissoko for me.

I think @Finney Is Back is right about the wind - it's still the kind of situation that needs another two errors to result in a goal though.

Hang on it was Rose's fault, he let the ball bounce which is criminal for a defender and after that you're always in trouble.

That is the way i saw it as well. Rose could/should have been more aware and instead ended up on his arse ( as he generally does). Anyway its done now and the next game is the one that is important.

Sanchez needs to realise he is the last man and adjust accordingly. His actions would've been fine if Toby was level with him or behind him but not as deepest defender. He should always be looking to drop off there. That is by far the biggest mistake for the goal I'd say, but the wind may have played a big part here. I don't think Sissoko is blameless in the goal either, at the point when we turned over possession he was the closest player to McGinn and he should've looked around, spotted the huge gap in behind us and attempted to track that run (although I think Villa were gambling in leave McGinn up when we had possession and this gave him a good 10 yard head start on Sissoko. Rose I think did pretty much all he could and got a bit unlucky, he spotted the run and tried to track it, ending up one on one in the box with an opponent. I still can't work out whether McGinn purposely delayed that shot or just reacted to a bobble of the ball.

Rose couldn't do anything other than let that ball bounce. He had made up a good 20 yards to get anywhere near the ball and was massively second favourite to win it before the bounce, had he dived in then he risked missing the ball and McGinn being clean through or even a red card for taking out McGinn as last man. He did the right thing in staying on his feet.

You can’t expect players ahead of the last man to do that surely?
Sanchez was last man so what he did was IMO poor
The lad he was up against was a cart horse TBF so I’d have let him have the ball

Seems to have more ambitions as a wrestler than a footballer at times. Always wants the physical tussle, think he is stronger than Verts or Toby, they are just far less likely to be drawn into it.

To me its a simple positioning problem, when one full back is far up field then the other should be in a defensive position with the centre backs moving across field, with the goal we over committed and got caught out by the long ball, if Rose had started further back he would probably been able to get a tackle on McCann or intercept the ball earlier. The change at half time with forwards playing wider stopped us being caught in that situation in the rest of the game.

Sanchez needs to learn that he cannot outmuscle every centre-forward in the EPL (like he presumably did in Eredivisie) and avoid getting into tussles with the likes of Deeney and Rondon.

I recall a scouting report which mentioned that his narrow shoulders would limit his ability to hold off other players and looks like that might’ve been what he was trying to do to Wesley.

Still not sold on the fella, not bad but not ready to challenge or take over from Verts and Toby. My choice would have been Tah in Germany.

that was because rose was also aware of an attacking player behind him possibly attacking down the right

To be fair, this situation does seem to be a bit open to interpretation since we don't know the specific instructions the players received. Sissoko does let McGinn run... initially I thought it wasn't his fault but he should have seen that Toby, Winks, Ndombele were all ahead of him so he would have to cover because another Villa player was on the right as @metalgear stated. But maybe he thought Rose would have the situation under control.

As for Davinson, I felt that Wesley was trying to occupy him and take him out of the play so that McGinn would be left with a 1v1 with Rose and only Hugo to beat. I personally don't put all the blame of this goal on Sanchez since there seemed to be a collective brain fart happening.

Why is no one questioning where our other CB was (or rather wasn't where he should have been)?

a corner he went up for.
