Chess World Championship

ringo

Tim Sherwood
Anyone following the chess? (I'm anticipating a chorus of nos)
Foolishly thought Anand might have a chance at long odds.. despite Carlsen being the supreme chess being.
Now I know why they were long odds.

Finally a "sport" that is more boring than heavy weight boxing and cross country skiing.

Just as I thought then.

Slightly concerned at Jordihno's comments. Surely not serious..heavyweight boxing and cross country skiing are two of the most exciting spectator sports.
For heavyweight boxing there is Mike Tyson vs Buster Douglas -an epic contest.
For cross-country skiing there is Therese Johaug..... (and the tour de ski - but mostly Therese Johaug) Oh and did I mention Therese Johaug?

As for televised world championship chess on a TV -not unless you live in India or Norway -or run your internet through the TV, but check it out here:

and at the same time here

Chess is a battle to the death, where you crush your opponent with your superior intellect (or in my case swear a lot having blundered away an important piece, then spend the rest of the game running away as much as is possible on a 64 square chess board, and hiding behind the pawns. If there are any left.) It is never boring or dull, or drawn out for a very very very long time.

Exciting chess facts:
World champ Magnus Carlsen can play and beat 10 people simultaneously playing all ten game in his head without seeing the board (it saves money) -to be honest he could probably do a lot more. (the record is over 30 - I can barely play one while staring at the board for lengthy periods)

or 20 people at once while looking at the board (fewer headaches -seriously, blindfold chess was banned in Russia for a while. Probably unpatriotic.)

And don't forget the famous coded yoghurt pot incident in a word title match where they had to put a board below the table to stop the players kicking each other.

Frankly, chess is almost more exciting than watching Spurs play at the moment.
So to anyone who still believes chess is boring I say fork off.......chess saying.

I find boxing in the lower weight class can be entertaining, but the heavyweights? Nah. They can't even make through one round before they're out of breath.

As for cross country skiing, I've seen enough hours of it to know that it is mind numbingly boring and Therese Johaug really isn't all that. She already looks about ten years older than she is. A few more seasons in the biting cold isn't going to help with that.

Chess can interesting to study, but as a tv sport or any kind of spectacle? I've had more enjoyable times staring at a wall.

Any particular wall? I'm looking for another pastime to fit in with the heavy weight boxing/cross-country skiing/chess/fishing...

Wait. How do you play chess without looking at the board?

Without trying to offend anyone, I think it helps having a touch of autism. To be good at chess you need to memorize 10s of thousands of different scenarios and moves.

They read the moves out in chess notation. So you have to hold ten games, with the moves as they progress, in your head.
(Or in the case of the world record 30+). Don't ask me how, though, as I struggle to remember where I left my house.

I would like to watch a game. What time are the games on?

Chess is more fun to play than watch though. Ringo are you a decent chess player?
