World Cup 2018 Group D (Argentina, Iceland, Croatia, Nigeria)

As said above, Ronaldo, Eriksen & Bale drag their teams (far worse teams) single handedly
- Messi in his prime has been disappointing and a flat track bully, from 24 - 30, he has helped Barca win 1 CL and Argentina nothing (not even a fudging Copa America)

That is wrong though. He won 2 CLs in that period

Also it is not right to say his his prime was 24-30. He was 22 when he won the Ballon D'or in 2009 when he helped Barca win the CL against Man Utd

So he has 3 CL titles and Ronaldo has 5. What is this, a c0ck waving contest?

He helped drag them to the European championship last time out though.

I don't disagree that he is an excellent player but so is Messi. People are going overboard on the basis of a couple of games. I think that we can all agree that Messi and Argentina have been underwhelming so far and that Ronaldo was excellent against Spain but it is still possible that Argentina go through to the next round and Portugal go out in the group stage. Any discussion on each players ability to drag a team with them should also consider that four years ago Messi took his team to the final and Portugal were knocked out in the group stage.

Seriously?
Have you seen the lad play at all? :p By a fudging country mile the best footballer ever to have graced a pitch. The fact that his team mates are useless not really his fault. You simply need team mates to play good football!

He is not even close to Maradona.

By what scoring 4 goals???

This is why all these comparisons are silly. If those 4 goals Messi scored and who he scored against all the way to the final don't matter, the same can be said of Ronaldo in Euro2016 when he only scored 3 goals in the tournament and went off in the final early on so didn't even help them actually win the final on the pitch.

Small small margins between two footballing greats.

I think we can safely answer yes to that question.

Nigeria's good performance and win over Iceland should be some consolation to Africa after all the poor display by the African teams in this World Cup. Thought Iceland will overcome Nigeria but they were poor and Sigurdsson even missed a penalty. At least Nigeria's win has given some hope to Argentina. But Nigeria won't be easy as they have beaten Argentina in the pre-World Cup friendly match. Also, Croatia are sure to rest their best players against Iceland. Iceland will a have good chance to beat Croatia and this will mean Argentina need to win by at least a 3-goal margin against Nigeria. For that to happen, Argentina will need Messi to get back his goal scoring boot.

Like he did at the last world cup?

Ronaldo has never turned up in the World Cup before this. In fact, he has only scored 1 goal each in his previous 3 World Cups. Messi has been much better in the previous World Cups without being outstanding. With him 33 now, maybe Ronaldo has suddenly realised he doesn't have much time to make a mark in the World Cup which is why he is doing well in this World Cup.

Or you can't read much into form over a couple of games

In the last 7 years, Barca has won 1 CL. Yes, he won 2 others under 23 in a very good (most people rate as one of the great club sides).

The fact is, as Barca's supporting cast dipped (only a fraction) and with a pretty good generation of Argentina players, he hasn't delivered final prize,

I have no issue that some people think he's better than Ronaldo (personally the stats say otherwise, but that's interpretation as well), my problem is people believe (see this thread) that he's a walk for the greatest player ever. Far worse players than Messi have carried their teams further than he has …
