World Cup 2018 Final: France vs Croatia

Ok. The interpretation on whatever an action was deliberate is often subjective. Otherwise there wouldn’t be any debate about today’s decision.

Yes, the interpretation is often wrong.

It’s been going on so long that I think IFAB should just drop deliberate from the wording.

Feel sorry for Croatia they would/could have won that if not for two shocking decisions. Good to see Modric name player of the tournament, thought after all the hype aboot Pogba during and after the game he would get it.

Croatia No. 10: Modric

France No. 10: Mbappe

Arg No. 10: Messi

Denmark No. 10: Eriksen

Spain No. 10: Iniesta

Belgium No. 10: Hazard

England No. 10: Raheem “I’m good at running” Sterling

England needs a creative maestro to unlock teams. Not someone who just runs around.

That to me is the problem with this particular law of the game. The word ‘deliberate’ is misleading.
It’s basically a hand-to-ball movement rather than ball-to-hand. Deliberateness is subjective.
In this particular instance I think there was enough uncertainty for the referee to have the confidence to stick with his original call.
VAR overall - imo - has worked, but there are enough questionable decisions to warrant further tweaking of its implementation.
It's really not the implementation of VAR that's the issue. I think the implementation was quite decent and it's only going to get better. But those rules...

As I said in an earlier post, VAR could be the catalyst for tweaking the rules to make them more clear-cut.

All those French subs who have barely contributed, like Lemar, poncing about in full kit with the legs of their shorts pulled up .

I’m surprised Jean Thierry didn’t join in.

England needs a creative maestro to unlock teams. Not someone who just runs around.

And you know what this exposes, the English mentality of lads who are creative under 5 foot 11 who get dumped out of Premiership sides early in their career for being too small, look at the figures of all of the lads you mention.

Well done to France for winning their first World Cup trophy since 1998. I think France fully deserved to win this World Cup as they were the most consistent team in the knockout stages. History books won't forgive France for the boring 0-0 draw with Denmark in group stages. France were very unconvincing in the group stages but they lifted their game in the knockout stages just when it mattered most. In contrast, Croatia were impressive in the group stages but were very poor in the knockout stages, relying on pure luck to progress to the Final. And Croatia ran out of luck just when they needed most in the Final.

Great to see the Final living up to the expectations, being an exciting and enjoyable match. This is easily one of the highest scoring Final of any major tournament in recent years. In fact, this is the highest scoring World Cup final since England beat West Germany 4-2 in 1966. The main reason is that both defence looked vulnerable for whole match. France scored all their goals at crucial times. France got a lucky own goal for their first and fortunate to get the penalty for their second. Mbappe and Pogba scored well-taken goals for their third and fourth goal. Too bad France couldn't score one more goal as the 5-2 score would have made it the joint highest scoreline of the World Cup final, same as Brazil's 5-2 win over Sweden in 1958. Croatia scored a well-taken goal to make it 1-1 but got a lucky second due to the big blunder by Lloris. Not sure what was Lloris thinking trying to fool around with the ball and losing it in the process. Lloris was very fortunate that France were leading 4-1 that time or he would have been blamed if France had lost this match. Maybe, Lloris deliberately wanted to to concede the goal to put his name into history books as that was one of the worst goalkeeping blunder in any World Cup final. Annoying thing is, Spurs' name will also be dragged into this comedy of error every time people remember of the World Cup 2018.

France have to thank the Magical Peru for winning this World Cup. France were always going to win this World Cup as soon as they were placed in the same group as Peru. Peru have played in 5 World Cups and in each of that, a team that have played against Peru have gone on to win the World Cup : Uruguay in 1930, Brazil in 1970, Argentina in 1978, Italy in 1982 and now France in 2018. It is clear Peru have magical powers which they use to help everyone but themselves. Just imagine, Peru have come to their first World Cup since 1982 just to help France win their first World Cup since 1998 ! Other teams, especially England, should pray that Peru will qualify and placed in their group for the next World Cup n 2022.

So, France have won the right to be humiliated by the Curse Of the Defending Champions in the next World Cup. You can bet the Curse Of the Defending Champions cannot wait to get it's hand on France. The curse humiliated France in 2002, Italy in 2010, Spain in 2014 and now Germany in 2018, sending all of them packing in the group stages. Well, the curse have badly damaged the morale of the mighty Germans as they failed to progress from the group stage for the first time since 1938. France better be prepared to get the similiar treatment in Qatar 2022.:D

This was posted on another forum. I find it hard to believe some of the choices.

Young, Paulihno, Neymar? Wouldn't have Lovren either, but he made it to the final. No Golden Boot winner? No Pogba, the greatest footballer of all time? Even Lloris is questionable after his ricket.

That’s not the official team of the tournament though is it? It’s just something to do with the fantasy football game by the looks of it?

So, a total of 169 goals were scored in this World Cup, just 2 goals less than the 171 goals scored in 1998 and 2014 World Cups. If France V Denmark had not finished 0-0 in their group match, it could have equalled or overtaken the 171 goals. But with 169 goals scored, the World Cup 2018 have overtaken 2010(145 goals), 2006(147 goals) and 2002(161 goals) among the 32-team World Cups held since 1998.

World Cup 2018 has been one of the best World Cups in recent years as most of the matches have been exciting with only France V Denmark finishing without any goals in a 0-0 draw. One disappointing thing is there have been no outstanding teams or players. All the teams, including the winners France, have been inconsistent at one time or another. The use of VAR might have put pressure on the teams as all the defences looked vulnerable. Almost all the matches were well attended but it could have been much better with more European fans.

Well done to Kane for winning the Golden Boot as the top scorer with 6 goals. But Kane could have done much better as he only scored 1 goal in the knockout stages. Disappointingly, 5 of Kane's goals came in his first 2 matches while he only scored 1 goal in his remaining 4 matches. Also 3 of Kane's goals were penalties while another was a lucky deflection.

Players from PSG scored most goals in this World Cup with 13 goals. Tottenham finished second with 12 goals. Just imagine if Alderweireld had not made that goal line clearance from Dier during the England V Belgium 3rd/4th place match or if Mbappe had failed to score for France against Croatia in the Final, Tottenham could have finished as the joint top scorers with PSG. As it is, Kane scored 6 goals, Son 2 goals while Alli, Trippier, Eriksen and Vertonghen scored 1 goal each for their teams. Really expected more goals from Eriksen but he was largely poor for Denmark apart from 1 brilliant goal against Australia.

It was great to see Tottenham captain Lloris lifting the World Cup as the France captain. Let's hope there will be more Tottenham players who excel in the World Cups in future.
