As I said, for whatever reason Trippier got the chance - I think he proved we didnt need Walker by the end of the season.

Yes, he is a poorer defender - but he was "fine" (until this season of course). BUT - his intelligence, vision and technique going forward (more than simply being good at crossing) were miles better than Walker has ever been and a big part of the good performances and results we had with him in the side.

Walker going forward is a lot like Sissoko. People love it because its all blood and thunder, look at the pace, look at the acceleration and running - but when you really look, what did he actually do with it? Most often the answer is "nothing". Rose is also very similar (but is better). Lots of bark, very little bite.

You might be right, maybe Trippier wouldnt have been given the chance had Walker not made noise - but I maintain its far from as simple as Walker being a shoe in to play for us now (had he not). Trippier quite justifiably showed things missing in Walkers game, and how they can improve us. So when it came to Walker leaving, for me at least, no big deal at all. And I havent missed him either.

Selling Walker was never a no brainer. Trippier was a good back up in a well oiled side. Relying on him as first choice was madness as a number of us pointed out on here. We're basically playing him and hoping that he'll get an assist or a free kick. You can't build a defence like that, they need to be solid at defending first. There's some mad stat floating around about the % of goals that we concede from attacks down our right hand side compared to to Walker was playing. I have never seen teams deliberately pump balls over a supposed top level full back like they do against us game after game. It's become an obvious weakness

As an aside on the attacking front, he's end product is bad but because of the positions his pace allowed him to take up, as a team we could play much either up the field and camp in teams halves meaning opportunites else where on the pitch.

Of course was. He was a growing influence in a developing side. Adequate in defence and far superior in attack, where we were spending most of our time.

He was of greater value to the team. And we were offered £50m for Walker who was proven to be as good as he will be, inadequate in attack, and an injury away from being useless.

THIS season Trippier has been terrible defensively, that doesnt mean the decision at the time was the wrong one based on how things were at the time.

If Walker never wanted to leave he'd still be back up to him or sold by now.

Trippier was never more than an average defender. He got beat in one on one situations just as often as he does now. The only big difference was he has made more errors this season than previous campaigns.

Unfortunately his crossing which used to be his main calling card seems to have deserted him. He is always reluctant to try and beat the opponent, admittedly he’s not quick but he just stops when he receives the ball on the halfway line and doesn’t try to push on.

I’ve missed having a competent defender at right back who hasn’t cost us countless goals/points this season.

Greater value? not so sure. The only reason Walker left is because he demanded a move away.
This. Walker decided he wanted away, not the club. That we never replaced him with a top level full back has cost us.

At no point have I said he was above average. The point is, until this season at least, he wasnt bad, he was adequate.

This season he has been VERY poor, but lets not re write history. Prior to that he was showing why he was worth the place.

Even for England he started out on the right, if Walker really was so superior he wouldnt have been pushed to CB would he?

They were played in a 5 to accommodate both of their shortcomings, Walker's attacking and Trippier's defending. Now England have some actual competent right backs in Alexander-Arnold and Wan Bissaka both of them will be phased out, Trippier has already as soon as Wan Bissaka moves to a big club that'll be the end of Walker.

As an attacking force he was worth a place but he was still the same defender who couldn’t defend. It’s just he has made more individual mistakes this season that have cost us.

More individual mistakes. As important the massive drop in attacking output. 3 PL assist this season, one assist in all competitions since the beginning of November! (whoscored.com) His best attribute was always his crossing imo, but those numbers are just far away from good enough.
