VAR: Sponsored by Chelsea

Another fudge up by VAR, the swiss goal should have been disallowed.
If you had scrolled up 2 posts you would have seen Glenda's Legs kindly posted the FIFA instructions:

On-Field Review (for interpretation)
Goals
  • foul committed by attacking player

So it wasn't a VAR issue at all.
The ref can choose whether to review it pitch-side or not, and he chose not to review it.
It is his choice. He saw the small push and thought it was fine.

Obviously a push can range from almost no force, to a gentle tap, to a gentle push, a small push, a firm push, a shove, a massive bulldoze... it is all open to the INTERPRETATION of the ref, that is the whole point.

I think you just don't get it and you're burying your head in the sand, fingers in the ears.

The ref has a choice whether to review it, and then if he does, he can INTERPRET it himself, as it is not a factual decision.

Not in real time speed. Slow-mo massively exaggerates everything - it's why its no good at all for reassessing fouls.

That’s something we were discussing whilst watching the game. Do the VAR officials review in ‘real time’, but from different angles, or do they review in slow motion? The latter can really skew interpretation.

Edit : on morning reflection, of course they will use slow motion. Stupid question. They will use all the tools available. Although whilst useful for some reviews - e.g. was a foul inside or outside the area - I agree with GB that it can be misleading when assessing contact (although you'd expect the officials to be able to take the effect of the slow replay into account).

VAR just doesnt work. Football is all about allowing small incidents of indiscretion/cheating go. VAR will only work if there is a directive to completely stop all fouls/cheating, but that will never happen. as it is being applied now, all it will do is leave teams feeling a great sense of injustice as no consistency can be applied from one decision to the next.

VAR should work. And the world cup will be a good proving ground for ironing out the issue with it.

It has, so far, been terribly implemented. In such a needlessly complicated way that I think its being set up to fail.

Of course, it doesnt guarantee a correct decision every time (did anyone say it would?), but if it steps us up from correct decisions 70-80% of the time to 95%+ then it is most certainly for the good of the game.

Ive said it a dozen times, and Ill say it again, the man behind the screen off site is a qualified ref (hilariously in full kit at the moment!) - he should be able to make and relay a call to the on field ref. None of this walking over to a screen flimflam.

Keep the audio public/broadcast so everyone knows who/what/where/why etc.

Easy.

South Korea were on the counter attack and ref stopped play for VAR.

What if he decided no penalty? SK are just denied the counter attack?

Yea I thought the same. Although on replays it was an obvious pen so maybe the VAR official told him it was stonewall?

That's why the decision has to be made by the video ref.

Ah, that makes sense. So in theory the game wouldn’t be stopped if it’s not a penalty.

Seems to be working much better than in the facup so far (cue a huge mistake in England’s match lol)

No surprise there, just waiting for its defenders to make a case for why it did fail.

It didn't fail it just wasn't implemented when England were on the attack. It is FIFA we know they do not want England to win the World Cup and will also do anything to help any African nation progress.

Not another conspiricy theory
