He was hurt for much of last season and did not come back the same player. I hope he remains benched unless we go to a three, but I hope Poch returns to 4-2-3-1 as it suits us and is what we know/have personnel for/play the best. I wanted us to sell Toby abroad: had his wage demands not been so silly he would not be here!

    Hahaha.

I don't think Toby has any say in what he wears or would even bother with crap like that.

That match worn shirt will be worth a fortune. Toby's creating his own retirement fund

That's pretty weird - was it just for the Liverpool game?

Only for a while. He played with the badge on early on. I remember someone said about the new kits when they came out that the badge had fallen off a shirt. I'm sure that's what happened, but I enjoy laughing at the silly conspiracy theories. :p

I just find the timing quite convenient that most on here were declaring him as the best CB in the league to past it over the space of a few weeks, right around the time he asked for more money and his contract negotiations went pear shaped. I’m guessing he’d instantly go back to one of the best CB’s around again if he signed a new contract.

Perhaps. If he got one from us, I’d hope you were right. Sadly I don’t think so though mate.
For the record, I have wanted him sold for a while now, and have been clear on that:

I am begining to think he has a clause in his contract that says he can not be left out, ( and before anyone starts in i am joking), whatever the reasons he should have been rested/dropped before now.

Thought he was more of his old self last night, some of those long passes he made were first class and a reminder of what he used to do.

I saw him drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's.

    And his hair was perfect.

    Ahhh ooooh

Imperious today... we must not sell him in the January window, for whatever price.

Excellent today especially given how ropey Sanchez looked. Was very impressed. Even though he’s lost an ounce of pace, I’d love us to sign him up.

    Ottawa, actually.
He's always been a magnificent CB (well, except in that one Carabao Cup game against Spam last season).

What changes is the way we rationalize that fact - if he appears constantly want-away, we try to downplay his excellence in order to cope with the prospect of him leaving. And if he seems okay for now, we return to praising him.

That's what we do as supporters, anyway. I suspect the view from the club's always been the same - that he's a damn good CB who will weaken us if he leaves, but also that he's burned a lot of bridges with his contract antics.

I think we're now at a stage in his contract situation where we can expect 400% commitment even if we don't reach agreement on a new contract. After all, he'll want to play to his potential in order to maximize his signing-on fee next season.

So we don't mind playing him, and he equally doesn't mind playing for us. And right now, that means we can go back to realizing how very good he is.

Silly error followed by very bad luck after the last ditch recovery tackle...

For me, you don’t get any credit for the latter when you are responsible for the former.

The conversation over his future will be very different next summer compared to this.
