The race for 86 points

A fine reflection of the brilliant run of form our key personnel have been in lately, but still only a snapshot. Let's just hope we can keep that momentum going for the rest of the season.

Snap shot at this point in the season but still massively relevant

Here's one - arse gave never lost a game that mustaphi has played in so he is arguably their most vital player

Who could they get that would be as good as Costa on short notice? What happened to the Batshuyi (spell?) guy?

Showing a touch of a rapist hence why conte doesn't play him

Even the Peterborough fans the other week commented about how poor he is technically but he did score

Well it will be a case of paying top £££ for someone but they don't mind that

Only thing is I can't fathom who they would get who is remotely half as good

They don't have to be as good, they have other weapons, they just need someone they can work with, and yeah, money is no issue.

Do they though??
He has created or scored half their goals hasn't he?

How many more will he make if he's too stroppy to play?

If they have to replace him, they have to replace him, all I'm saying is it's better to do so during a transfer window than outside of one.

Only time you can replace him unless you already have that player

I think they will go for Lukaku

Well outside of the window limits them to recalling one of the 150 players they have out on loan

They can only be recalled during the window IIRC. There might be an exception depending on whether they have to be registered in the 25.

their defence is why I discount them, technically and tactically, they were under the cosh at 1-0 today but were leaving 3/4 men upfield, no surprise that after a bit of ping pong united managed to find an unmarked head in the box

Their defence and goalkeeper are not up to scratch, but their trump card is Klopp. He's a top manager who knows how to win leagues, even when faced against clubs with richer resources and seemingly better players. I can't see them not getting top 4 at least.

Can we change the subject to fight for the title now? I think we as a fan base need to act like the club we now are. We had managers last season saying we were the best team they played against. Statistically, until the final day we were the best team in every department in the league. We have what is pretty much universally agreed now as the best defensive players. We have an awesome striker. We have beasts in midfield. We have players that can unlock packed defences.

I'm not saying we are going to win the league. But we are challengers, and I think having a thread around our season calling it the fight for the top 4 is symptomatic of our fan base not being confident in where we're at. And also, it's the same thinking that means certain media outlets will print a story saying that clubs performing well below our standard can bid for our players, and be successful, as if it is in any way realistic. Last season the objective at the start was the top 4. But we out performed. Why do people think we'd go backwards this year? Because the 'big clubs' spent money? They spent money last year too. They don't have our spirit, they don't have the comfort in their systems like we do, they don't have our players that get better with every passing month.

Times have changed. We will have bad runs of form again. There's a good chance we won't win the league. But in the same way that Atletico Madrid have established themselves among the elite in Spain, we've done it here. Believe it guys!!!

I agree with your post in principle but I still believe it's a big thing for our club to establish ourselves in the top 4, not just to be flash in the pan like Leicester. Back to back CL appearances would still be a fantastic return given what we are up against financially. Not to mention we move into our new stadium in 18 months or so. Going into the new ground with either 2/3 CL seasons in a row or a cup win increases our chances of filling the stadium week in week out.

Liverpool have an easy finish to the season and no European distractions. We really need to get a result against them I think.

I don't know exactly who Liverpool play outside the above games however I would say that towards the end of the season, sometimes the league position is less relevant. Teams struggling in the league always seem to fight harder late on in the season. I'd rather play a struggling team now than in the last 5 or 6 games.

I was actually quite reassured when I looked at our run-in earlier as I thought 3 of our last 6 games were against teams who might well be sufficiently clear of the drop but no chance of getting Europe. That said, for us I think it will all come down to handling the EL in a sensible fashion. I dont think its any coincidence that we've gone on a run in the league at a time when the European competitions have taken a break

Liverpoo are due a weak spell - they haven't had one at all this season....though having said that, I remember thinking exactly the same about Leicester last season

My money is on all three London teams making the top 4 plus one of the northerners. Arsenal always finish top 4 and cheatski are too well positioned; my biggest fear is that we put too much effort into the EL and the distraction causes us to drop points. Now that we have a genuine chance of a very high finish, I really hope that Poch rests say 5 first choice players for every EL game

Completely agree. That's without even mentioning that we will have to play on Sundays. Poch himself has even said recently that playing after Leicester every week was a big uphill task, guess what, it will be exactly the same challenge this time around as Chelsea have no Europe to deal with.

I wouldn't be upset at all if Gent knock us out of the EL so we can go for the FA Cup and a high league finish.

My other big fear is that we spend so long chasing the league leader only to just fall short, and then lose the plot for the last 4-5 games like we did last season. I was more impressed with the win yesterday than I was with the Chelsea win as I have said many times that on too many occasions, we follow up a massive win with a disappointing draw. I feel like the win yesterday was an important step and that any meltdowns like last season are a thing of the past.

I still think we need to keep an eye on the EL just incase the league form goes tits up; it is a very winnable competition and easy route to CL qualification.

What we have failed to do recently in KO ties is kill the game in the first match to enable us to take the second leg easy, or alternatively, set up for a bore draw with the second string in the first leg and play a full team in the second leg. The one thing Poch does constantly in two leg matches, and annoys the fudge out of me, is play moderately weakened teams or a 60%/70% team; to me it should be play the best 11 available or rest all the first 11 and set up to be hard to beat.
