Money. CL is worth about £65m, Europa League is worth about £5m. We need this money. It also means we get a better stadium sponsor deal, better players attracted etc.

Money. We don't have to win it, we have to get to the knockouts and make £65m whilst the Goons labour in the EL and make £5m. That is a £120m swing in fortune. £120m. Or £100m if I'm out with my estimates. Then factor in the stadium sponsorship. A huge lump of the stadium paid off.

    Great single handed effort... :p

I've seen far worse go unpunished though.

I'll keep bumping this for the next few fixtures. As much as I thought the goons would lose tonight (and they should lose with the performance they put on), I gave them 1 away win from the away games at Everton, Leicester, Wolves and Watford, with 1 loss and 2 draw. They got the loss at Everton and the win at Watford. With how they are playing away, they will do well to get the 2 draws at Wolves and Leicester imo, which is what I put them down for initially.

Chelsea got an expected loss at Anfield. Not much to say on that one.

Utd got an expected home win v West Ham, but they were incredibly lucky to get it. They looks to be playing the worst football of all the teams going for 3rd/4th, they are struggling.

In short, things are still on track for the 'win our home games and get Champions League" scenario. Keep that in mind if we lose to City away in the league game.

Should that not be the reason why we should not complain about being in the CL in the first place

Nobody is complaining about being in the CL.
They are just making the point it is absolutely VITAL that we make CL next year, ahead of Cheats and Goons.

You said "What is the point of striving to win our remaining league matches if when we qualify for the CL we are going to bitch about playing too many matches?"
We are striving to win the league matches because it is super vital we make CL.... if we make the QF or SF or Final of the CL it is great fun, but financially it is not as vital as making the CL next year.

Good post and the last paragraph is especially relevant. We will get a point at best on Saturday. If we do, things will tighten up but we are in the box seat here. Let’s not panic. Win our home games and throw in something at Bournemouth and we’ll make it.

We’ll win the CL anyway so coming top 4 is only to keep out Arsenal and/or Chelsea:)

Yep....on balance of probability we lose at City on Saturday, Woolwich will beat Palace Sunday and Chelsea beat Burnley on Monday meaning we'll be in 5th place by the time we kick off v Brighton on Tuesday evening.

...with a game in hand on Chelski as I calculate it. At this moment, the smart money goes on us and the goons being the two who get there...

Jeeeeez it was called a hypothetical. You know, pub chat, silly scenarios, create a debate etc etc. Just run with it.

But to answer your second point...I didn't say we'd lose. But I do believe with the current injuries we have and the fact we're at the end of a very hectic season for a squad who've already seemed to suffer from World Cup fatigue, that we risk dropping points by fielding weaker 11's in the league in order to stay fresh for CL. I can see a draw coming in a game we should win on paper.
I also was quoting the Bournemouth away game, not Brighton which will be unaffected by any CL semi final tie.

Chelsea will start to prioritise the EL and Hazard will definitely prioritise it.

    THIS!
They've been handed an absolute dingdong-easy route to the final and I can't see anyone else left beating them. Possibly a final v Napoli could've been interesting with Sarri, but Arsenal have all but scuppered that little plot twist now.

I think the disparity between the CL and the Europa has somewhat narrowed in recent years..... ironically since we started to compete in the former and Arsenal the latter.

The Goons earned about €30m less reaching the Europa League semi-final last season than they did from Last 16 in Champions League the previous year, so still nearly a Sissoko per season’s difference between the 2 comps!

These figures make a mockery of FFP. City, Liverpool etc spend hundreds of millions on transfers let alone wages which simply doesn't stack up when the tv money only totals a max of 80m Euros.
