I don't think the table will support that theory. We're on the same level as Sri Lanka/South Africa at best. Awful fielding and batting against the Aussies.

How we failed to get any wickets early on in those conditions beggars belief. Buttler's missed stumping was schoolboy standard.

I think a lot of the good recent performances have been based on a strong opening stand, if Roy isn’t fit I’d be tempted to promote Root or even Stokes who has probably shown the best batting temperament when things aren’t going our way. ABV - anyone but Vince

I think the ECB should forgive Hales and get him in. It’s the quick runs that’s so destructive . Root only goes at run a ball so glues an innings together I’d leave him at 3. Stokes is our get out of jail card so again would not promote him.

It’s a tricky one really need Roy back lively

I think there is alot of over reaction, as a round robin this is a long long tournament where usually you play less teams, more crap like Holland, Ireland, Nambia and go through and lose in knock outs, where this format makes it look worse than it is because you almost play a whole tournament can lose and still go on and win.

I agree re the over reactions.

I’ve been critical of our tail, it hasn’t performed recently, but we were pre tournament favorites for good reason, we’d beaten everyone, everywhere, for about 2/3 years now.

Looking like Pakistan might lose to the Afghan's, that would be a shock and help us too

    Much more like it today.

What was up with the Sky Sports coverage though, it was like watching it via an Indian channel, regularly left with just Indian commentators and no English ones. It’s supposed to be a UK channel surely?

Honestly those guys are so biased as well, “340 was only a par score, India would be happy to chase it” (!!), “the only thing that can save England now is wickets” (this was whilst India needed about 12 an over!). At least the English commentators are realistic with the England team / performances.

Kohli moaning that the short boundary favoured England

India are like Liverpool fans, always moaning and thinking everything should be in their favour

He is usually ok, was very humble last year when we beat them, but that short boundaries thing is rubbish.

I think they got the chase badly wrong which is probably reflected in the wickets in hand. They were like 80 runs after 20 overs, thats leaving far too much to do in my opinion.

    Cricket lovely cricket. England!
Credit where it belongs though because our bowling was far too good for them. They just couldn't get the ball away because we kept it so tight and gave them no room. Jofra Archer reached 96mph but it was Woakes who really stood out in that first spell, something like 8-1 from his first 6 overs.

    Match-winning performance right there.

England one-day specialist Jason Roy is a "definite option" to face Australia in the Ashes series later this summer, according to head coach Trevor Bayliss.

Roy has never played Test cricket but has impressed opening the batting for England in one-day internationals.

He has averaged 68.20 runs with one century and three 50s for England in their run to the World Cup semi-finals.

England have struggled to find a solid top-order partnership since Alastair Cook retired in 2018.

With Keaton Jennings struggling for form, Roy could partner Rory Burns at the top of the order.

Asked on BBC Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek if Roy could open in the Ashes, Bayliss said: "I think so, whether at the top of the order or at three.

"It is no secret that in Test cricket we are looking for a solid combination at the top of the order since Cook retired last year.

"Roy's had success at international cricket and that goes along way to being able to handle the pressure. It's a definite option we've been talking about around the selection table for the last 12 months or so."

Speaking about Roy's performances at the World Cup, Bayliss added: "The way he goes about his batting gives confidence to the rest of the batting line-up."

Roy, 28, averages 42.58 in one-day internationals with nine centuries, while he averages 38.38 runs in first class cricket.

Jennings has averaged 25.19 runs in his 17 Test matches with two hundreds.

England play Australia in Thursday's semi-final at Edgbaston, while the five-Test Ashes series starts on 1 August at the same ground.

FFS - a fit Anderson would pretty much give us the edge in this forthcoming series.
