Kieran Tierney looks like the next Bale. He is really fast and has one hell of a shot on him. He's young, but the raw attributes he possesses makes me believe that he could go far.

I do however think that he won't want to leave Celtic, that might ultimately be his downfall as he probably will need a higher level of competition sooner rather than later.

If this is true, this is the issue with Poch’s idea that we need to move quicker. Because it then puts us in direct competition with the City’s of this world. And we may still get him, but as much as Poch wants Levy to take risks financially, this is the risk of moving quicker.

City’s interest doesn’t feel serious. They don’t have enough room for De Ligt with Otamendi, Stones and Laporte already there. But it is the risk of moving at the same time as the few clubs with more money. Do we have the gumption to compete with them is the question.

Why doesn’t it feel serious? Do you think he believes he can’t get better CBs than Otamendi?

I don't think there's a real 'risk' involved, though. Either we wait until everyone's done pillaging the market, at which time there will assuredly be few players we can actually upgrade the team with...or we start slugging it out with the big boys to see what we can get.

We won't get a *lot*, but we might well pick up more than we might have had we waited. It's just a case of having the perseverance to keep pushing in the face of numerous setbacks. And of course, the supporters need to accept that as well.

A good thing about moving early is that you get other clubs to show their hand early too. What would be point of waiting and waiting before making a move for DeLigt of anyway a club like City can outbid us at the drop of a hat.

Because I think clubs absolutely weigh the benefits of signing a player to stop another team getting one. We do it with clubs lower down on the food chain to us (Siggy with Liverpool). The benefit of waiting means that clubs make their moves early, and it means we can get exactly who we wanted without entering a competitive process, which both drives up the price and motivates another club to make a bid so that we lose out.

Chelsea did it to us with Willian. United did it to City with Sanchez. Obviously they are good players but a big part of the motivation is to stop a close rival pulling away from you, and we need to avoid being chasers or the bridesmaids as much as possible. Like us getting Sanchez was because we waited - other clubs filled up with CBs, Chelsea got Rudiger for example, United got Lindelof, and we were able to get who we wanted at a price we deemed fair.

I’m not saying either way is right or wrong, but I think we need to be prepared to compete financially in bidding wars with top clubs if we want to go directly against them. If we end up doing so, it will show a lot about how much the new stadium puts us on a new plain financially and how much Levy trusts Poch to deliver success if backed.

Otamendi was really good for them this season and it doesn’t appear they are going to move out a title winner for an 18 year old kid. There’s no obvious gap for De Ligt to fill, where as we will likely sell Toby.

If City want a player.......what’s to stop them getting him?

The fact that if they don’t have an obvious gap in the first 11, we represent a better option for career progression. Many players are smart to this and the world over, many are making the smart decision, which we are benefitting from. A player will absolutely turn down more money for first team football, particularly if they are under 25, because the likelihood is they will improve with us to the standard that they may get that Madrid / Barca move if they kept progressing at that rate (or if we become a super club, we’ll pay the money they’d get if they improved properly anyway) The struggles of Martial and Shaw at a club like United show that it isn’t good for your career to not be keen as a key player, even if you’ve got another 30k or so a week so that season you’ve spent on the bench.

It’s all about strategy and there are lots of pieces that have to come together. I bet the reason Levy has moved quickly on De Ligt, if he has, is because he believes Spurs is his best option for first 11 football, and so it’s worth the risk to try and steal a march even if it wakes City up.

Because maybe City don’t make a move with the motivation of spiting us, and maybe they sign someone else, and maybe we then get our preferred choice rather than our 2nd or 3rd choice, while City have already taken up a spot in their squad.

They may or may not seriously want De Ligt, but if they wanted a CB, liked him, but had the added benefit of forcing us to go for a back up choice, they’re more likely to bid for him if they know they can spite us in the process.

The always reliable Daily Fail says the deal for Riqui Puig to sign with Spurs is virtually done.

Probably just setting up a Spurs Gazumped! story when City cash bomb the kid.
