Gonna stick some money on him getting the golden boot at the world cup. That would be typical Spurs.

Or a buy back clause. He will be back playing in one of the major European leagues within a couple of years. It will be good for him to get regular football again at a good club, but he is too good for the Dutch league….

Given some of the comments above, I was trying to think of a player we have willingly sold who improved as a player and went onto bigger things?

My abiding memory of Bergwijn was the hope that came with his debut and then never really seeing the pace everyone seemed to think he had in Holland. Fits and starts after that, he was technical decent but when he did get opportunities I also remember him really struggling in front of goal when he had time to think. Oh and that 2 minute cameo against Leicester that got us CL :D

Still no regrets on our side though?

No, was just answering your question. Tripier maybe some regret. Won la liga too and rb has been an issue for us.

No regrets about Trippier from my side. Yes he’s better than what we’ve got now but he has declined from when we signed him and he was poor defensively. The real issue is we never replaced Walker adequately. Aurier has the tools but no brain, on or off the pitch.

Tripper is a good one, I was happy to see him go based on how he'd been performing but we then signed even worse players. I'd love him to have been in this set up when you think how much space he'd have to ping crosses in.

In both cases I'm not sure either player kicked on that much, just found themselves at a better fit with clubs nearer the top of the table than us? Usually if you aren't good enough here then we don't see the player coming back to a better club in the prem, so I don't think Bergwijn will buck this trend.

I still feel Walker to Emirates Marketing Project was a watershed moment for us, not just that we blew the money but the fact we strengthened City

i put that down to poch isolating him and freezing him out of the team at times. There was nothing better in the league that year watching Walker and rose bombing down the wings all game with Dembele abusing the opposition midfield all by himself.

we never replaced Walker adequately and the poch system went backwards thereafter.

I think Walker probably took offence that someone of his ability had to share the position with Trippier. Once he made it known he wanted to leave we didn’t have much choice as he made it clear his head had been turned. The problem is we never replaced him adequately, 5 years on.

Bergwijn is a good player but he wants more game time and he’s not going to get it here. Hopefully it won’t come back to bite us, honestly I don’t think it will.

I think bergwijn would be immense for a team like West Ham, Villa, etc. would be in my fantasy football team all day long. The problem is that currently we are just a step above that level and he needs games to thrive.

nothing wrong with his ability but at times his decision making and passing isn’t on the level it should be for a team that wants to achieve certain targets and standards.

Indeed, we didn't want to spend £50m on a quality replacement so we spent waaaaay more on a load of inadequate players instead and paid them waaaaaaay more wages. BRILLIANT LOGIC GUYS

Not saying we bought inferior players on purpose, just that he was a key player that we’ve struggled to replace.

    Bale.
    Modric.
    Carrick.

Maybe we weren't exactly willing but were certainly prepared to move them on eventually...and tinkle the proceeds away

Not sure Carrick improved after he left, or Bale. Carrick was massively under-rated when with us. Modric continued to improve after us but was on that trajectory already.

    Indeed.
This is clearly about the manager/ manager-player relations, not the skill or talent of the player.

I used willingly as in the context of Bergwijn I got the impression some people think it may be a mistake. The three you mention were all taken for record fees by clubs higher in the food chain when they were key players for us, along with Berba and Keane. You could maybe add Walker to the willing list though!
