As promised from my post yesterday, a pic of the dead baby chipmunks evicted from a nest in my reeking cottage rafters:
Yeah, cute and adorable but their parents made a terrible mess of our cottage. Can't have it becoming a regular thing.
It's not like I don't like critters. Love 'em around our cottage. We get all sorts and happy to see them as long as they aren't causing problems.
Here's a thrush feeding her chicks last summer:
A mink preparing to enjoy a shore lunch of a freshly caught rock bass:
And the ubiquitous northern Canadian lake bird, the loon, with it's own young:

We had a side dish of carpenter ants that were beginning to nest in another area and their colony wouldn't have been found had we not had to rip out so much stuff from chipmunk waste. Just caught the bugs in time. Queen ants were present and ready to begin egg laying. They're very damaging critters. Dropped them all onto a plastic drop sheet and squished the lot of 'em.
A treat for me getting three days to work with my son. He moved out about 4 years ago. Works as a teacher. The pandemic shifted the March break to April, so we took advantage of his week off and the mild weather to work on the place.
Our cabin is about 800 sq. ft., first built in 1956 and added onto afterward. We've rebuilt a 16' x 10' sunroom, had the foundations restored and levelled the floors. Lady Norf and I bought the place before we was married. We'll never sell it. Kids get it and deserve it. They were conceived there.
Made from old growth cedar. Incredible wood. For fun, we have this sailfish mounted on one wall. My wife's parents caught it in Acapulco back in the '60s.

It's quite a humble place. Electrical service but no running water - unless you counted running down to the lake with two 10-litre jugs and filling them up. Too far above the lake - about 75 ft. - to pump water. We'd be blowing the circuit breakers daily. We put in eavestroughs and rain barrels a couple of years back to save on labour.
We've always maintained that we're there to enjoy the natural surroundings and live with less. Nowadays, they're building mansions around the lake since the land has become so valuable and people are looking for somewhere to work from home. Their entitled kids don't visit each other by walking around the lake like we did, meeting and greeting neighbours and catching sights of wildlife. No, they go bombing by on their dirt bikes, quad cycles and utility carts. Not so much as a 'Hi, How are you or Kiss my ass' from them.
Out on the water, they mindlessly destroy shoreline with huge wakes generated by their wakeboard boats. Thinking about building a golf tee box and using nothing but a one iron to hit balls with. Low screamers that they'll have to steer clear of.

For the first time in my life, I'm contemplating buying a shootin' iron.
Reason One. To winnow out the pesky varmints trying to nest in our humble cottage. Against squirrels and chipmunks, shotguns and .303s are undefeated. All I really need is an air rifle and pellets.
Reason Two. Hoping the target practice I'll need to take, out the back of the lot, will echo and resonate around the lake and tinkle off the noisy schit disturbers that have moved in recently. When the usual hunting seasons (lot of different game to bag) begin in October, it all goes a bit Deliverance. The booms and cracks from the woods drive most normal people a little crazy and eager to stay away.

Trial by jury, yes I believe in it. But I don't think it yields perfect results nor would I exempt it from criticism.
And this seems a prime example of a failure.

Because the people decided. They didn't think that a demo against an oil company warranted the punishment. @JerusalemMan doesn't like these people who are trying to protect the world we all live in, probably has a dislike of them in general. 12 members of the public on the other hand came to their own judgment. You can define justice in many different ways.
It's not the jury's place to decide whether or not it should be punished. It's their place to decide whether or not the accused did the things they were accused of.
The sooner that bunch of terrorists are officially recognised as such, the better.
