Set Pieces

I can't remember the last time we scored directly from a free kick. No matter how good the position is we constantly fcuk it up. Might as well let Sanchez take them and at least have a good laugh.

Following Kane's recent pathetic attempt at a free kick - he hasn't apparently scored from one since 2014! and that was a deflected effort against Aston Villa!!.

I have been banging on about corners and free kicks for ages and our really poor record from them at both ends of the pitch. Arsenal have employed the former Emirates Marketing Project coach as a corner specialist and look at these results. Levy - this could be your most important signing!!!

I have a feeling Kulu would be pretty decent at them if given a chance. There's something about his ball striking technique that makes me think he can strike a dead ball well. Alas we will never get to see because Kane just wastes them all.

Son has good corners with movement and zip to them, again he probably does a better job with direct frees than Kane.

Dier has scored before but I don't know if that was a one off but worth a try again at this point.

Its annoying that Kane obviously thinks he's top dog, as although we've had Dier take a few, over half must still be Kane....which is well proven by now to be a waste.

It defies logic though that someone that so precise and consistent with his finishing is so far off the mark with deadballs.

I find I strike a moving ball much better than a dead one. It is legitimately a different technique needed. Although like you say you'd think someone like Kane who is close to the masterly of striking a ball would do a better job than he does.

I wonder if in training he is the best with them? Which is concerning because if that is the case we should just not bother taking direct freekicks. [emoji28]

He must be doing a very good job at them in training otherwise it makes no sense that he keeps taking them.

Is there a list of free kick scorers for us since 2014? Would be interesting to see what competition he has (percentage scored obviously, as he takes the most).

I’d also like to see our free-kick conversion rate but that stat doesn’t seem to be readily available…

FWIW I stumbled across this article which says that only 6% of FKs do hit the back of the net though.

Did you know that, in the Premier League, the direct free kick conversation rate stands at only about six per cent? That equates to one goal for roughly every 18 attempts.

Perhaps that’s what makes them stand out in our mind so clearly – not just the beauty of seeing a ball so precisely caressed from such a distance – but the rarity of it. Indeed, since 2005-06, only two Premier League players have scored from as many as four free kicks in one season – Cristiano Ronaldo (twice) and Yaya Touré.

But how many goals are scored from free kicks year on year in England’s top tier? Are there any trends, and any reasons behind such trends? Let’s take a look:

I find it concerning that not only is harry brick at them but that we can't seem to stop him taking them.
It was similar with Eriksen, although he did have a good record at one stage, especially when he consistently hit the first man with corners.

We need a set piece specialist coach. Since the Arse got one, they have gone from strength to strength - not only scoring from corners but also not conceding from them either. It is likely to make the difference between CL football or not this season.

Or Ward-Prowse, I’ve been wondering if his all round game is good enough to warrant having him in our CM?
Because the all round game of all our current CMs are so impressive?:D He would be an upgrade on what we have, guaranteed goals and assists from his set pieces plus he gets assists in open play too…..

I think you’re half joking? But, excluding set pieces, I don’t think he’s better than Skipp or Bentancur? Prob on a par with Hojberg but better once you consider dead balls.
