I don't think that Fabrizio Romano is particularly reliable though and is a bit of a self publicist, passing off other people's stories as his own.
 
You'd wonder why United wouldn't accept that sort of clause. Anyone have any idea what a "pre-emption" clause is?

It limits who he can be sold to. I think that he just means first option if they match an accepted bid. What it might do is restrict our chances of creating a bidding war for him and driving up his sale price. It also might make us more susceptible to Real dirty tricks if they try to destabilise him in order to force a sale.
 
So if he's successful it'll essentially be a year long loan with some cash earned for us - if he's brick, we just lose a lot of cash.

There are conflicting reports on the buyback deal. All this assumes that Real want him back. It's possible that he does well and we sell him to someone else because Real aren't interested
